William (Bill) Whiting Lyon passed away peacefully at home in Longwood, Florida on September 6, 2024, at the age of 78.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Marianne Serros Lyon, along with his three stepsons, Nick (Jen) Rapp, Mark (Alexis) Rapp, and Chris (Karen) Rapp, and his four grandchildren, Alex and Kate Rapp and Xavier and Florian Rapp. He is also survived by his sisters Marian Boye and Ginger Lyon, his stepsister Kim Skyelander, stepbrother Bill Hattendorf and brother-in-law Phil Barney, niece Megan (Ben) Boye and his nephew Dylan (Sumi) Boye and great-nephew Ravi Boye.
He is preceded in death by his parents Bayard Lyon and Wynne Wolf Lyon and stepmother Nancy Cross Lyon, and his sister Laurel Lyon and brother-in-law John Boye.
Bill was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 3, 1945. He was active in Boy Scouting and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended Lyons Township High School and graduated from Earlham College with a psychology degree. After earning a Masters Degree from UNC in Public Health, he went on to spend 30 years working as a Data Analyst at McGuire VA Hospital in Richmond, VA. He was a master of the Excel
spreadsheet.
Bill met his wife Marianne in Richmond, and they had been married almost 25 years. Together they welcomed their four wonderful grandchildren. They recently moved to the Orlando area and lived minutes away from all three sons and their families. Bill and Marianne were truly blessed to have family so close.
Bill was known as Runner Bill, running almost every day. He participated in many races, including a marathon and a triathlon. He was also known as Mr. Weather Channel. He could tell you the direction of the wind by degrees and the speed of the wind, learned from his many years enjoying his favorite sports of sailing, boating and snow skiing. He will be remembered for his strong bass voice in the Richmond Choral Society, Society Singers and The Brandermill Choir. He sang for these groups for over 30 years each.
He loved volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, The Brandermill Church ministries and going on mission trips. He was generous with his talents, and his time with family, friends and the community.
Service for Bill will be held on September 21, 2024 at 2 p.m. at The Brandermill Church in Midlothian, VA. 4500 Millridge Pkwy, Midlothian, VA 23112
