William John Shaffer died peacefully on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at the age of 89. Bill was born in Chicago, IL, on September 22, 1928.
He met Mary Ann Wittstruck, who would become his wife of 61 years, while serving as a camp counselor at a Methodist youth camp.
He received a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida. He led a selfless life, always putting the needs of others before his own. With Mary Ann, he was co-director of Casa de Los Amigos in Mexico City, a Quaker-based guesthouse and community center for peace, from 1979-1981. He remained active in his church communities and was deeply involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann, his mother and father Elsie and Earl Shaffer, and his older brother Robert Shaffer.
Bill is survived by daughter Mary Kay Pozo and her husband Mateo Pozo, son Paul Shaffer and his wife Susan Shaffer, grandson Matthew Pozo, granddaughter Mary Ellen Vajravelu and her husband Ravy Vajravelu, and great-granddaughter Eesha Vajravelu.
A celebration of Bill's life will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 1:30 pm at the Mayflower Retirement Community in Winter Park.
Memorial gifts may be made to the First Congregational Church of Winter Park or the American Red Cross.
