Born on January 26th, 1947 to father, William B Dunn II and mother, Mary Allgaier Dunn in Streator, Illinois. A lifelong Floridian, Bill passed away on April 4th, 2023 after a short battle with congestive heart failure. He was 76. Bill was most known amongst his loved ones as a gentle, kind, intelligent man who always listened with intent. He made everyone around him feel important. It is fitting that he passed on the same date as Martin Luther King Jr. because Bill spent most of his life fighting for and preaching about equality.
A graduate of the University of Florida, Bill started his career at the Orlando Sentinel in 1969. After serving in various newsroom leadership positions, he became managing editor in 1981. During Dunn's tenure as managing editor, the Sentinel won two Pulitzer Prizes. He stepped down as managing editor in 1993, becoming associate managing editor before retiring in 2001.
Bill loved to read, write, and photo-journal. He also was an avid sports fan and was passionate about his teams including the Gators, Magic, Bucs, White Sox and of course his beloved Bishop Moore Hornets. He was an inaugural inductee of the Bishop Moore Hall of Fame for his accolades in football, basketball and track. He also spent way too much time on his fantasy football team the Barnacle Bills.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Sandy of 53 years; his only child, William B Dunn IV and daughter-in-law Jeanie and his 8 grandchildren: Aubrey(29), Kaleita(23), Alleigh(20), Ethiopia(19), Liam(17) his namesake William B Dunn V, Kaylee(17), Mayla(16) and Haben(14). He also is survived by his devoted and loving brother Rick Dunn and sister Susan Mathews.
A celebration of life will be held on April 15th at 10am at St Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Winter Park, where Bill's mom was the first kindergarten teacher, he and his siblings attended school along with his son and grandchildren. In honor of Bill's preference of casual living, we encourage everyone to dress in colorful island attire. In lieu of flowers please donate to one of Bill's passions, Bishop Moore Catholic Alumni Association Scholarship fund.
