It is with great sadness that the family of Walter Hand Meriwether, Jr. announces his passing on May 18, 2018, at the age of 73.
A native of Sanford, Walter was a third-generation Meriwether in the area. He grew up on 20th Street. Walter was passionate about every aspect of Meriwether Farms which was established by his grandfather, Charles James Meriwether in 1914. In the past fifteen years, he could be seen at the roadside stand selling his fruit.
Walter graduated from Stetson University and obtained his Master of Business Administration from Rollins College. He taught math for 10 years at Sanford Junior High and Teague Middle School. His last 26 years in the school system, he was the Risk Manager for Seminole County Public Schools.
Walter was a devoted family man. He and his wife of 49 years, Vicki Bozarth Meriwether raised their three daughters in the family farm house on Celery Avenue.
He leaves behind his wife, Vicki; his three daughters, Kristi Lommerse (John), Jenni Meriwether (Teri), and Cindi Welscher (Olivier). He also leaves behind the joys of his life – his grandsons Robert, Steven, Travis, Connor, Charles, Nicholas, and Alexander. He is also survived by his sister, Pam Weaver (Brian), of Vero Beach.
Activities always involved spending time with his family. Walter loved a good garage sale. In his later years, he and his family traveled extensively to US national parks and Europe. Disney was a favorite destination. Walter took great pleasure being with all his family on Disney cruises.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 24, at 5:30 pm at Markham Woods Presbyterian Church, 5210 Markham Woods Road, Lake Mary, 32746. A reception will immediately follow in Anderson Hall.
Memorial donations may be made in memory of Walter to the Seminole County 4-H Association.
