Celebrating the Life of Walter Johanson

Walter passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026, at the age of 77. He was a man of deep curiosity, enduring passions, and above all, a gentleman at heart. His life was defined by the stories he shared, the waters he navigated, and a legendary love story that began with a simple act of chivalry.

A Central Florida Romance

The greatest chapter of Walter’s life began in the aisles of an A&P grocery store in Central Florida. Spotting a beautiful dark-haired woman, Walter was instantly captivated. After checking with the store manager to see if anyone knew who she was, he gathered his courage, walked over, and introduced himself to Barbara. Noticing the chill of the grocery aisles, he offered her his suit jacket to keep her warm. That sweet, chivalrous gesture made an unforgettable impression. Barbara agreed to see him again, and the rest, as they say, was history. 

Together, Walter and Barbara shared a life full of adventure. They were both devoted dog lovers, sharing a deep affection for their canine companions over the years. They also found a profound peace and joy in the mountains, falling in love with the high country of North Carolina, where their cabin homes became treasured sanctuaries—places of warmth, rest, and beautiful memories surrounded by nature.

A Passion for the Road, History, and the Water

Walter loved nothing more than opening his doors to family and friends. He and Barbara were natural hosts, always eager to entertain and fill their home with laughter, warmth, and excellent food.

Conversations with Walter were always rich and lively. He was a true automotive enthusiast, capable of spending hours reminiscing about the many cars he owned throughout his life—though none ever quite matched his absolute favorites, his Corvettes.

His curiosity extended deep into history and geography. Walter was an avid collector, surrounding himself with items and artifacts from World War II, alongside carefully curated collections of stamps, coins, and vintage American pop art.

Growing up in St. Petersburg, Florida, the pristine beaches and open ocean called to him early on. As a teenager, the moment he and his brother saved up enough money, they jumped at the chance to buy a boat together. That decision sparked a lifelong love affair with the water that became a core part of who Walter was. Throughout his life, he loved nothing more than welcoming friends and family aboard, guiding them through the beautiful rivers, springs, and lakes of his home state.

A Curious Mind and Generous Heart

Walter’s thirst for knowledge also made him a passionate traveler who loved learning about different cultures. Closer to home, he possessed a remarkably green thumb. Whether it was selecting the absolute freshest produce or offering expert tips on how to nurture plants and trees, he was always eager to share his wisdom with others.

Family and Legacy

Walter’s warmth, his captivating stories, and his generous spirit will be deeply missed by his family. He is survived by the love of his life, Barbara. His legacy lives on through his daughter, Lisa Ethem and her husband Bill, his cherished grandchildren, Jessica Federman and her husband Scott, Jacqueline Ethem, and Jillian Ethem; and his adored great-grandson, Rowen Federman. 

He is also fondly remembered by his brother, Richard Jager, and his wife Bege; his sister, Barbara; his brother-in-law, Jim LaRegina, his wife Donna; as well as his nieces, Lucy LaRegina, and Jennifer Jager, and his nephew, Sean. Walter leaves behind a wide circle of friends who had the privilege of sharing a conversation, a boat ride, a joyful backyard gathering, or a peaceful mountain view with "The Griller."
