Obituary

Thomas Alton Russell, 89, of Winter Park, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, October 2, 2017. He was born on June 4, 1928, in Richmond, VA to his loving parents, Bernard and Hattiebelle Burch. Tom was a proud graduate of Georgia Tech, Class of 1950, and was an Army veteran as well. He was involved in commercial real estate and managed several large office buildings in downtown Orlando. Although Tom grew up in Atlanta, he called Winter Park home for the past 50 years. Tom was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother. He enjoyed watching sports on television, especially his beloved Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Atlanta Braves. Tom was a Roman Catholic and practiced his faith at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Winter Park. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Bernard Jr., and an infant sister, Patricia. Tom is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan, along with their six children, Mary Polster (Ken) of Orlando, Thomas Jr. (partner Deb Bell) of Winter Park, Ann Waltz of Tallahassee, Joe (Debbie) of Maitland, Patty Dame (Joe) of Palatka, and Susan Acquaviva (Paul) of Newburyport, MA. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren (Tony Polster; Alisha and Lauren Russell; Katherine Waltz; Joey, Tim, Nolan, and Nora Russell; Sarah Surrency, Joanna Feagan, and Tommy Dame; Caroline, Nick, Sam, and Will Acquaviva, and 10 great-grandchildren (Harper, JP, Reese, Trip, Ryan, Natalie, Max, Jordan, Grant, and Miles), two sisters, Mary Ann Puff of Peabody, MA, and Susan Rodgers of Atlanta, GA, as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews. A celebration of Tom's life will be held at the St. Margaret Mary chapel, Winter Park, on Thursday, October 5th at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Comforter, 480 W. Central Pkwy, Altamonte Springs, FL 32714, or to the charity of your choice.
