Obituary

Mr Thomas William Carney, of Cocoa Beach, FL, passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at the age of 70.

Thomas was born to parents Leo and Margaret Carney on June 15, 1947, in Cleveland, OH. Thomas graduated from St Ignatius High School. He obtained his Bachelor of Architecture from Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, OH and a Masters in a joint program for Planning, Medicine, and Operations Research from Columbia University, in New York, New York.

In the mid-1970s, Thomas was certified by National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) and built his career in Architecture. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Thomas designed and managed over $2.5 billion in construction worldwide, specializing in the design of medical facilities and hospitals. Thomas worked with many of the world's most acclaimed medical facilities, including the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinics, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (University of Miami), Shands Hospital (University of Florida), Mount Sinai Medical Center, and St. Lukes Hospital.

Many of Thomas' projects were the first of their kind in the research and development of high technology applications including the first magnetic resonance imaging facility ,artificial heart labs, and planning simulation modeling for healthcare systems. He was particularly proud of his specialization in the design of neo-natal units; he eventually became the Project Architect for the design and development of the Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital in Orlando, FL.

Thomas married Gudrun in 1973. The couple raised their two children, Gwendolyn and Patrick. In the mid-1990's, Thomas left Architecture to open his own software development company,Computer Automated Facility Management, Inc (CAFM). Thomas created some of the first modular facilities management software, managing all phases of buildings and public spaces -from planning & building through maintenance. His software was used by many US government and local Florida government agencies, including NASA.

Thomas is survived by his wife Gudrun; daughter, Gwendolyn Hays; his son, Patrick Carney; his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ellen and Micheal Skeya; his nephew Shaun Skeya and family; and his niece Margaret Howells and family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Margaret.

There will be no viewing. The cremation will be handled by DeGusipe Funeral Home & Crematory. Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service, scheduled for January 27, 2018 located at Mead Botanical Gardens: 1300 South Denning Drive, Winter Park, Florida 32792 from 2:00-4:00 PM. Scattering of the ashes will occur at a later date in both Florida and Ohio. Additionally a memorial mass will be held in Cleveland at a later date.
