Obituary

Owen, Stewart M., 92, was welcomed into heaven on July 5, 2014. Born on November 17, 1921 in Enigma, GA to Philip and Dovie Owen, he was the third of their four children. Stewart, or Stu as he was frequently called, grew up on a farm near Omega, GA and graduated from Omega High School. He was accepted to Georgetown University but stayed back to help care for his family when his father became ill. Stewart served in the Navy during WWII and later moved to Winter Haven, FL where he began working for Gulf Life Insurance Co. (now American General) and met Betty Ruth Scott of Lakeland. He cleverly followed her to Orlando and they married in 1952. They celebrated 62 years on June 28 at their home in Maitland. Stewart had a distinguished 38-year career with Gulf Life and served in managerial positions in the Dothan (AL), Winter Park, Orlando, Tampa, and Lakeland districts. He achieved a CLU designation. He enjoyed being active in his church and his community, serving as president of Life Underwriters and Rotary Club of Winter Park, and in numerous leadership roles at his church of 60 years--College Park United Methodist. But he drew his greatest enjoyment from his family, which all live in the Orlando area. He is survived by his wife Betty and their 3 daughters and sons-in-law: Laura & Mark Pooser, Peggy & Bret Keiffer, and Nancy & Roger Elliott. His 4 grandchildren include Lauren (Bryan) Elliott Riley, Brooke Elliott, Grace Keiffer and Grant Keiffer. He is also survived by his brother, Rev. Herbert Owen of Athens, GA. A service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, July 11 at College Park United Methodist Church, 644 W. Princeton St., Orlando 32804. Visitation & Remembrance 11:30 am; Service 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church or to Hospice of the Comforter, www.hospiceofthecomforter.org .
