Sigrun Smith passed away peacefully in the comfort of her daughter's home in Longwood, Florida on February 25, 2022, at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earle L. Smith (March 26, 2000). She was known to her close friends as "Runa."

Runa was born in Reykjavik, Iceland on May 7, 1925. Her parents were Groa A. Gudmundsdottir and Pall Jonsson. She had an older brother, Bjorn Palsson. She was a licensed hat maker in Iceland and married Army Captain Earle L. Smith on October 26, 1945, in Reykjavik. Runa emigrated to the United States in 1947 to join her husband, and became a naturalized citizen. She had five children: Earle Paul, Elizabeth Groa, who passed away shortly after birth, Eric, Betty, and John. Earle and Runa attended Ohio State University. Through the years, they lived in Columbus, Ohio; Newark, Ohio; Meriden, Connecticut; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Orlando, Florida. Runa worked at the Walt Disney World Village in merchandising for 16 years. She also served as President of the Hagar Viking Club of Central Florida.

Runa always enjoyed being with her family, and served as a Den Mother for each of her sons. She also loved gourmet cooking, coffee, chocolate, silver smithing, reading, caring for her pet cats, and gardening (rose bushes and poinsettias).

Runa was preceded in death by her parents, Pall and Groa; brother Bjorn; daughter Elizabeth; husband Earle; son-in-law John; and dear friends Kristen and Rosemary. She is survived by her loving children: Earle Paul (Marsha), Eric (Kathy), Betty (John, dec.), and John; grandchildren Jack (Jennifer), Laura, and Carrie (Mark); great-grandchildren Renee, David, Wiley, Emma, and Kate; sister-in-law Betty; nieces Thora, Thorunn, Sunna, Debbie, Donna, Peggy, Sandy, Steph, and their children; nephews, Bolli, Bjorn Vignir, Agust, Craig, Wayne, and their children; and lifetime friends Jean, Lilla, and Mary. Runa embodied gentleness and kindness, and was deeply loved by her family and friends. She is now with The Lord Jesus Christ.

A memorial will be held on Friday, March 25, 2022 at 10:30am at Ascension Lutheran Church (351 Ascension Drive, Casselberry, FL 32707). A light luncheon will follow the service, and all are welcome.
