Savannah Louise McCall passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at the age of 89. Savannah was born in Leesburg on November 23, 1936. Her mother was Etta Beatrice Hooks and her father was George Hooks, Sr. Not many people have two birthdays, but oddly enough, for most of Savannah’s life she celebrated her birthday on November 24th. It was late in her life, after looking at her birth certificate, that Savannah discovered her actual date of birth was a day earlier. Four of Savannah’s siblings preceded her in their homecoming, Johnnie Hooks, Robert Nelams, Maria Hooks and another infant, George Hooks, Jr. Her other siblings include Ivory Hooks, Willie Hooks, and Luvernice Croskey.
Savannah was active in her school and was the homecoming queen for her high school, Lake County Training School. She was quite the scholar as Savannah received both a bachelor's and a master’s degree in education from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, FAMU. She taught elementary school where she guided and touched the lives of numerous students. Savannah was musically inclined and played the piano for Mount Tabor Baptist Church.
Savannah was married to Alfred Lord McCall on December 28, 1952. They had two children, a son Alfred McCall, Jr., and a daughter, Bridgette Ward. Savannah and Alfred have three grandchildren, Jordan McCall, Amethyst Ward, and Brenden Ward.
“We are Family” is Savannah’s credo! Her love for her family predominated. She helped many family members achieve educational goals and was constantly lending a helping hand to family members in need. Her love of kin is further evidenced by orchestrating the inaugural Hooks Family Union. The tradition meant so much to her and the fruits of her labors continue thanks to her efforts and the efforts of many other family members.
