Our beloved Sara Mercedes left our physical realm on January 22, 2021 at 11:10 a.m. to continue her journey in the spiritual world, joining her late husband, brother, and parents. She departed on a beautiful wave of turquoise blue light. She was calm and content on her final hours and was surrounded by loved ones, who gathered in a circle of prayer and love around her. Upon her departure, her family serenated her with a Venezuelan Birthday song to celebrate her life and her many achievements.

Sara Mercedes was a source of love, support and inspiration to her many friends and family members. She was an outstanding woman with a giving and generous heart, a loving mother on occasion with conviction to her sons and daughters Rafael, Diego, Amelia, Marcela, Olga, and George. She was a creative woman who taught her children about family love, art, and cooking. Their guide to life's righteous path, as well as a committed housewife who formed a strong family foundation.

As a young woman when she was searching for her first job as a drafting technician, she met who will later become her husband, Rafael whom she was married to for the next 58 years. During her honeymoon in Acapulco and Habana, Sara Mercedes had so much fun with her husband that in her own words "got in trouble from having too many tequilitas!". Later on she became a kitchen designer, antique furniture salesperson, an executive secretary, a medical office assistant, and later her own business as a legal document preparer, translator and expeditor to many Venezuelan compatriots who had to start a new life abroad.

While living in Venezuela, she was a magnet and gracious host to many home gatherings of her children and their friends with whom she shared her love through her home cooking, sense of humor, heartfelt advice and positive energy for all. Even when her children were not at home, their friends would stop by and visit her to chat for endless hours, share stories and/or reach out to her for advice. She graciously welcomed the role of surrogate mother to all of them. Her children were always a source of great pride, which she constantly expressed to everyone she knew, as well as the achievements and milestones of her nieces and nephews, which were as important to her as those of her own children.

She was also the best neighbor anyone could wish for – friendly, generous, and helpful. Every Christmas, family, friends, and neighbors looked forward to her delicious Hallacas, Ham Bread, Roasted Pork, and Fruit Cake. Displays of her creativity and generosity could be seen in the Christmas ornaments she made by hand, the clothes she made (and fixed) for her family, the food she cooked daily for her growing children, as well as the help, care and love she so selflessly gave to others when in time of need.

Sara Mercedes was best friend and confidant to her neighbor Olga; outstanding sister, mother figure, and office assistant to Vicky; partner to her brother Fernando and her son-in-law Richard in many home improvement projects, and a close friend to her brother Augusto. She enjoyed the time spent with her brother-in-law Alvaro, exchanging stories while drinking "Vinitos", knowing well that an imminent headache was to follow the next day but that it would be totally worth it!!!

Sara Mercedes had an adventurous spirit, loved to try new things and had an open-minded view of the world. She travelled with her family and visited many places, including Alaska, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Greece, and many Mediterranean places. She flew on a hot air balloon over the Napa Valley in California; attended catholic mass in the heart of the Vatican with her sister in Rome, Italy, seated only a few feet away from Pope Jean Paul II; celebrated her daughter's birthday at a famous tapas bar while watching flamenco dancers perform in Barcelona, Spain; enjoyed a cerveza as she celebrated New Year's Eve under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco; visited the magnificent mountains and played with snow in Whistler, Canada with her daughter; and recently visited the ruins of Chich?n Itza in Mexico and enjoyed the beautiful beaches of Cancun. Sara Mercedes cruised to various ports of call with her brother Fernando and his wife Consuelo, and their children Luisa, Carlos, Mauricio, Claudia, and their grandchildren. Any time she knew of an upcoming family travel plan, she would immediately inquire about joining saying: "Sera que yo puedo unirme? (May I join your trip?)

She loved music and the arts, attended any event within reach. Frequented Sunday symphony concerts and art gallery events. She was a proud groupie and best fan of her daughters' "musical endeavors" and loved karaoke. On her 80th birthday party, she even sang out loud "Bohemian Rhapsody" with her family. She was a great salsa and merengue dancer, and recently took samba and waltz lessons. She enjoyed playing Rummikub with her family with a great sense of humor.

In her golden years, Sara Mercedes attended ESL classes and was able to learn entry-level English, which she proudly practiced with others. She had an empathetic and inclusive spirit which in spite of language barriers, she always found ways to connect with her granddaughter Lilly, all her children-in-laws Petra, Richard, Jesus and David, and any new English speaking acquaintance in a meaningful and loving way.

The United States welcomed her with open arms, not only providing her with permanent residency but also the great benefits this country provides to seniors. Through the generosity of her children, and friends known and unknown, Sara Mercedes was able to live out her days in a safe and cozy home. Donations to furnish this new home were abundant with over 50 individuals contributing to help support her move to the United States. She was extremely overwhelmed by all the support she received and expressed a great deal of gratitude every day, holding a place in her heart, to all who help make this dream a reality.

Mom loved living in Casselberry, Florida as it reminded her of the town of "Los Caracas" in Venezuela. She often expressed that living there made her feel like she resided in a beach resort. During the last 3 years in the United States her caregivers Zulma, Sandra, Karen and Ligia became her support system, allies, confidants, friends, and like with many others, she became their adopted Mom. She enjoyed attending the senior center every day and made wonderful friends during this period of time. She was immensely happy to witness a woman become the first vice-president of the United States and would have loved to be able to vote for her.

Sara Mercedes' presence will be greatly missed by those who were impacted by her love and her spirit will remain within the hearts of all of those who were fortunate to be part of her journey. As her God-daughter Christine once said: "This world would have been so much smaller without her." A donation will be made in her honor to the "Meals on Wheels" organization as an expression of her gratitude for this senior program.

With a beautiful hummingbird guiding your spirit and illuminating your path through eternity, may your soul rest in peace. This beautiful blue sky today is a reminder that you will always be with us and you will forever be loved and remembered.

We wrote our thoughts of you at your favorite place in the Kraft Azalea Gardens Park. How fitting it is that your favorite bench has a dedicated plaque that reads: "Family is Everything".

Nuestra amada Sara Mercedes dejó nuestro ámbito físico el 22 de enero de 2021 a las 11:10 a.m. para continuar su viaje en el mundo espiritual, uniéndose a su querido esposo, hermano y padres. Partió en una hermosa ola de luz azul turquesa. Ella estaba tranquila y contenta en sus últimas horas y estaba rodeada de seres queridos, que crearon un círculo de oración y amor a su alrededor. A su partida, su familia le dedicó una serenata con una canción de cumpleaños venezolana para celebrar su vida y sus muchos logros.

Ella fue una fuente de amor, apoyo e inspiración para sus muchos familiares y amigos. Era una mujer excepcional con un corazón generoso, lleno de bondad y sabiduría, fue madre amorosa y a la vez estricta con sus hijos Rafael, Diego, Amelia, Marcela, Olga y George. Una mujer creativa que les enseñó sobre el amor a la familia, el arte y la cocina. A la vez, también fue un compás en el camino de la vida, así como una ama de casa comprometida que creó y sostuvo una sólida base familiar.

En su juventud, buscando su primer empleo como dibujante técnica en construcción conoció a quien se convertiría en su futuro esposo, Rafael con quien estuvo casada durante 58 años. Durante su luna de miel en Acapulco y La Habana, Sara Mercedes se divirtió tanto con su esposo que en sus propias palabras "¡me metí en problemas por tomar demasiadas tequilitas!". Más adelante, se convirtió en diseñadora de cocinas, vendedora de muebles antiguos, secretaria ejecutiva y asistente en un consultorio médico, y en sus últimos tiempos laborales, administrando su propio negocio de gestoría de traducción y documentación legal para muchísimos compatriotas venezolanos que empezaban una nueva vida en el extranjero.

Mientras vivía en Venezuela, fue piedra imán y amable anfitriona de las innumerables reuniones en casa de sus hijos con sus amigos, con quienes compartió su amor a través de su preparaciones culinarias, sentido del humor, consejos sinceros y energía positiva para todos. Incluso cuando sus hijos no estaban en casa, estos mismos amigos la visitaban para charlar por horas interminables, compartiendo historias y pidiéndole consejos en un papel tácito de madre sustituta, el cual ella aceptaba incondicionalmente. Sus hijos eran una fuente constante de orgullo. Se consideraba muy afortunada de este hecho, y expresaba constantemente este sentimiento a todos los que la conocían. Así mismo, las vidas, los logros y los hitos en la vida de todos sus sobrinas y sobrinos fueron tan importantes para ella como los de sus propios hijos.

Sara Mercedes también era la mejor vecina que cualquiera podría desear: amable, generosa y servicial. Cada Navidad, su familia, amigos y vecinos esperaban con ansias sus deliciosas Hallacas, Pan de Jamón, Pernil y Torta de Frutas. Las muestras de su creatividad y generosidad se podían ver en los adornos navideños que hacía a mano, la ropa que cosió (o arregló) para su familia, la comida que cocinaba a diario para sus hijos, así como la ayuda, el cuidado y el amor que tan desinteresadamente daba a los demás cuando estaban en tiempo de necesidad.

También fue amiga y confidente del alma de su vecina e hija adoptiva Olga; hermana excepcional, figura de la madre, y asistente de oficina de Vicky; ayudante estrella de su hermano Fernando y su yerno Richard en muchos proyectos hogareños, y amiga cercana para su hermano Augusto. Disfrutaba del tiempo que pasaba con su cuñado Álvaro, intercambiando historias, y bebiendo "Vinitos" dispuesta a aceptar el inevitable dolor de cabeza posterior como algo que ¡totalmente valía la pena!

Sara Mercedes tenía un espíritu aventurero, le encantaba probar cosas nuevas con una visión abierta del mundo. Viajó con su familia y visitó muchos lugares, incluyendo Alaska, Italia, España, Turquía, Grecia y muchos sitios en el Mediterráneo. Viajó en globo aerostático sobre el valle de Napa en California; asistió a la misa católica de Semana Santa en el corazón del Vaticano sentada a pocos metros del Papa Juan Pablo II y comió paninis frescos sentada en los escalones del Panteón de Agripa, en Roma; celebró el cumpleaños de su hija en un famoso bar de tapas mientras veía bailaores de flamenco en Barcelona, España; disfrutó de una cerveza mientras celebraba la víspera de Año Nuevo bajo el puente Golden Gate en San Francisco; visitó las magníficas montañas y jugó con la nieve en Whistler en Canadá; y recientemente visitó las ruinas de Chichén Itzá en México y disfrutó de las hermosas playas de Cancún. También viajo en crucero con su hermano Fernando, su esposa Consuelo, y sus hijos Luisa, Carlos, Mauricio, Claudia y sus nietos. Cada vez que se enteraba de que alguien planeaba un viaje, inmediatamente preguntaba: "¿Será que yo puedo unirme?

Le gustaba la música y el arte y por ello, asistía a todo lo que encontraba a su alcance, fueran conciertos sinfónicos o populares y amaba frecuentar exposiciones y eventos especiales en galerías de arte. Era una orgullosa seguidora y la mejor fanática de los esfuerzos musicales de sus hijas y le encantaba el karaoke. En su fiesta de cumpleaños número 80 se la oyó cantar "Bohemian Rhapsody" a todo pulmón con su familia. También fue una gran bailarina de salsa y merengue y recientemente tomó clases de samba y vals. Le encantaba jugar a Rummikub con su familia y tenía un gran sentido del humor.

En sus años dorados, Sara Mercedes asistió a clases de inglés como segunda lengua y fue capaz de aprender inglés de nivel básico, el cual practicaba orgullosamente con otros. Tenía un espíritu acogedor e inclusivo y, a pesar de las barreras de lenguaje, siempre encontró maneras de conectarse de una manera significativa y amorosa con su nieta Lilly, sus hijos políticos Petra, Richard, Jesús y David, y cualquier nuevo conocido de habla inglesa.

Los Estados Unidos le recibieron con los brazos abiertos, no sólo proporcionándole la residencia permanente, sino también los grandes beneficios que este país ofrece a las personas de la tercera edad. A través de la generosidad de sus hijos, y amigos conocidos y desconocidos, Sara Mercedes pudo vivir sus últimos años en un hogar seguro y acogedor. Las donaciones para amueblar este nuevo hogar fueron abundantes con más de 50 personas que contribuyeron a ayudar a su traslado a los Estados Unidos. Ella estaba muy agradecida por todo el apoyo que recibía y expresaba una gran gratitud cada día, guardando un lugar en su corazón, a todos los que ayudaron a hacer realidad este sueño.

A ella le encantaba vivir en Casselberry, Florida y a menudo expresaba que vivir allí la hacía sentir como si residiera en un resort de playa al estilo antiguo de "Los Caracas" de la época de sus primeros tiempos en Venezuela. Durante los últimos 3 años en los Estados Unidos sus cuidadoras Zulma, Sandra, Karen y Ligia se convirtieron en su sistema de apoyo, aliados, confidentes, amigos, y como muchos otros, se convirtió en una segunda mamá. Ella disfrutó asistiendo diariamente al Centro para la Tercera Edad en Casselberry donde hizo nuevas y maravillosas amistades. Y en el mejor espíritu de mujer aliada con su género, aun hasta en sus últimas horas en este plano, prestó atención el cambio de gobierno en este país y pudo comentar lo inmensamente feliz de ver a una mujer convertirse en la primera Vicepresidenta de los Estados Unidos y más aún, de cómo le hubiera encantado poder votar por ella personalmente.

La presencia de Sara Mercedes será muy extrañada por aquellos que fueron impactados por su amor y su espíritu permanecerá en el corazón de todos aquellos que fueron afortunados de ser parte de su viaje. Como dijo su ahijada Christine: "Este mundo habría sido mucho más pequeño sin ella". En su honor, se hará una donación a la organización "Comidas sobre Ruedas" como expresión de su gratitud por este programa.
