Departed to be with the Lord – April 16, 2020

Rubén was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, the son of Mercedes Merced Gomez and Maria Dolores Merced Reyes. Brother of Gloria, Carmen and Evelyn, Rubén spent his formative years in Rio Piedras and moved to New York City at age 15 where he finished high school. He loved to tell stories of his days as a CBS messenger in New York, and of the bodega his stepfather Juan Green had in Little Italy.
After finishing high school, Ruben was drafted to serve in Vietnam where his bravery during combat resulted in him being awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and an Air Medal. Upon returning from Vietnam, he began working as a draftsman for the municipality of Bayamón, Puerto Rico. It was there that he met his beloved Sonia Ivelisse Goveo, who worked as a secretary in the same office and stole his heart.
Married for more than 46 years, Ivy and Rubén, "mama" and "papa" as they called each other, became a dynamic duo for the rest of their lives on this earth. They raised their children Rubén, David and Elisabet, and their grandson David, Jr. with loving discipline, good humor, and great sacrifice, first in Cerro Gordo de Bayamón, then in Caguas, and finally in Vega Baja and Dorado. They were members of the Disciples of Christ Church for most of their marriage and were counselors of the Youth Fellowship at ICDC Cerro Gordo. He remained active in various leadership roles at all the churches he joined through his life.
Rubén retired from the US Postal Service after 33 years of service in Caguas, Hato Rey, and Vega Baja. After his in-laws went to be with the Lord, Rubén fulfilled his dream of retiring in the state of Florida. There he established a beautiful home with Ivy, surrounded by their children and witnessing the graduation of David Jr. from high school last year. They traveled often, including dream trips to Europe.
Rubén had a mischievous sense of humor, and had an irrepressible laugh that made everyone around him join him in mirth. He had a tremendous talent for growing and blooming orchids. He made an incomparable arroz con pollo (chicken rice). His sudden departure, victim of the coronavirus, only a week after the death of his dearest Ivelisse, affects us greatly and although we feel the pain of his departure, we are confident, as he was, that he is in the Peace of his Lord.
