Robert Malone (Crusty) Rosemond, 93, passed away peacefully at home July 21, 2018. He was born in Charleston, SC Nov 3, 1924 to Dovie Malone and James A. Rosemond. Before entering college, he proudly served his country from 1942 to 1946 in the naval air corps as an electrician's mate, flying PBY planes in the Pacific theater.
Duke University then became a beloved focal point in his life for the next nine years, as he completed his BS, MD and medical internship training. He treasured his lifelong friendships developed as a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity, a group that would continue to hold reunions 30 years post grad.
It was there that he met his wife Sally, and together they began their memorable journey of 64 years. After residencies at Emory and the VA in Atlanta, his cardiology fellowship followed at the Medical College of SC.
Dr. Rosemond's private practice of cardiology began in Sanford, FL in 1958 and continued until 2018 when he retired at age 93. His sense of humor, listening ear and comfortable style, endeared him to the thousands of patients he cared for during his 59 years of practice. Whatever the situation, there was always a joke or story to ease the concerns or pain. He made medicine fun. To be loved, respected, and compassionate were his goals to live by.
As a Duke alumnus, he served as class agent, president of Duke Alumni Association, Davison Club, and Half Century Club. He was a member of AOA (a medical honor society), and received awards for distinguished leadership and volunteer service.
Throughout his years of medical practice he has held membership in the Florida Medical Association, Seminole County Medical Society, and American Society of Echocardiography. He served as Chief of Staff of Central Florida Regional Hospital, Chairman of the Sanford Airport Authority and a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner for the FAA. He was a member of Markham Woods Presbyterian Church.
Each year as the fall season approached, his thoughts centered on an annual trip to the Colorado mountains and his beloved hunting camp where he enjoyed countless memorable experiences of fun, friendship, camaraderie, and an occasional trophy.
He loved being home with his family and the many friends who came to visit. Daughter Cherie (David), sons Jim (Geraldine), and Rick (Amy), and five grandchildren all share his passion for nature and the outdoors. A life full of living, laughing, helping, and working, he met life's challenges with a positive determination to make a difference in the lives of those he touched.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 11:00am at Markham Woods Presbyterian Church 5210 Markham Woods Road, Lake Mary, FL 32776. Reception will follow at the church.
