Robert Dell FitzGerald was born in Westfield Massachusetts on August 12, 1938 to parents James and Bernice FitzGerald. Bob graduated from Westfield High School in 1956. Bob was an active member of the band where he played the trumpet. His desire to tinker with cars led to his enlisting in the United States Navy. He completed his basic training at the naval base in Bainbridge Maryland. After the completion of his basic training he was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Sanford Florida. In 1962 he met and married Sylvia Whitaker and they moved to West Palm Beach where he was employed with Pratt and Whitney. He was then transferred to Ohio where their three children were born. In time they ended up back in Florida where he purchased the Sun Motel in Winter Park Florida. The family owned and operated the motel for several years. His marriage to Sylvia ended and the motel was leased to the state and later sold. That is when his career with the Sanford Orlando Kennel Club began. While employed there he met a woman named Joan Galgano who needed some repairs done around her house. He went to her Casselberry home to fix her door; she invited him in for coffee. They went on their first date on October 4th, 1986 and have been together ever since.
