Nga Thi Tran
August 27, 1927 - February 5, 2023
Nga Thi Tran, age 95, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2023 at her home in Casselberry, FL while surrounded by family. Since immigrating to United States 48 years ago from Vietnam, she established roots in Cos Cob, CT with support from The First Congregational Church of Greenwich. As the matriarch of the family, she balanced preserving the customs and traditions of Vietnam while embracing American culture. She commuted daily to her job at TIME (magazine) in New York City, NY, paving the way for her children to finish their education, begin their own careers, and start their own families. As co-author of "Shallow Graves: Two Women and Vietnam" (1986), she wrote of growing up in Vietnam, the impact of war, and immigrating to America. After retiring from TIME, she traveled to visit family all over the US and finally settled in Florida (1995). Calling Winter Springs then Casselberry home, she loved traveling, gardening, shopping, knitting, playing piano, mahjong, cooking with family and friends, and listening to the choir while attending mass at St. Stephen with her family.
She is preceded in death by her husband, 5 brothers and 2 sisters. She is survived by her brother Tuan Tran Song and wife of Greenwich, CT; sister-in-laws Luong T. Kim Dung (widow) and Luong B. Phung (widow); her children, daughter Khanh Karen Nguyen and husband of Casselberry, FL; son Vu Tieu Truong and wife of Orlando, FL; daughter Yen Szirisky (widow) of Montverde, FL; her grandchildren My Hang Truong and husband of Mentor, OH; Suzanne Hoyer and husband of Unionville, CT; John Ly Nguyen and wife of Virginia Beach, VA; Mai Linh Nguyen Achong and husband of Winter Springs, FL; Tom Pyfer of Montverde, FL; Christine Truong of Casselberry, FL; and her ten great-grandchildren.
The viewing will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at DeGusipe Funeral Home & Crematory (9001 N Orlando Ave, Maitland, FL), reception to follow at 1:00 p.m.
The Catholic Vigil will be held on Monday, February 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the same location. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 28 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Church (575 Tuskawilla Rd, Winter Springs, FL).
