Rear Admiral Milton "Danny" Chipman Clegg, DDS, MS (Dental Corps, United States Navy, retired), (86) passed away in his Orlando, FL home on December 20, 2019. Milton was born September 1, 1933 in Salt Lake City, UT to Delma Clarke Chipman and Heber Milton Clegg. His schooling included: North Phoenix High School, Phoenix Arizona (1951); BA in Experimental Biology, University of Utah (1956); Doctorate in Dental Surgery, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland (1960), Certificate in Advanced General Dentistry, US Naval Dental School in Bethesda Maryland (1968); and an MS in Systems Management, University of Southern California (1986).
Admiral Clegg's 32-year career in the United States Navy started with his commissioning as an Ensign in the US Naval Reserve during his freshman year of dental school. Immediately following dental school, he reported for active duty to Marine Corps Air Station, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii as a Lieutenant then augmented into the regular Navy in 1963. Throughout his military career and subsequent rank advancements, Admiral Clegg served in various capacities from Dental Officer, Commanding Officer, Assistant Chief of Staff and ultimately as the 29th Chief of the Navy Dental Corps. As such he was responsible for the dental health care of more than 750,000 US Navy and Marine Corps personnel and supervised 1,750 dentists. Duty stations included: USS ESTES (AGC-12); Joint US Military Advisory Group, Chinhae Korea; US Naval Station, Keflavik Iceland; 3rd Force Service Support Group, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, Okinawa Japan; and multiple US duty stations. He met and married Mary Ellen, a Navy nurse, while both were stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital, Maryland.
Admiral Clegg is entitled to wear the following decorations and awards: the Legion of Merit with gold star, the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with device. In 1992 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by the President of the United States and received the Exemplary Service Award from the US Public Health Service.
Following his military retirement, Doctor Clegg served for seven years as and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Professor of Dentistry at Northwestern University Dental School in Chicago, IL. He coordinated all clinical programs, and supervised the management and care of over 25,000 active patients. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha, the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, the Federation Dentaire Internationale and an honorary member of the Republic of Korea Military Medical Society. He was a Fellow in both the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists.
Brother and Sister Clegg settled in Orlando, FL where have made their home since 2001 and have volunteered together in the Orlando Florida Temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 18 years. Brother Clegg served his church and community in various capacities as teacher, leader and ordinance worker throughout his life. Of his many accomplishments, he lists receiving his Master M Men Certificate in YMMIA as one of his highest achievements and faithfully fulfilling his role as a home teacher as his greatest honor.
Milton is preceded in death by his son Dennis Park Clegg of Philadelphia PA and survived by his wife Mary Ellen McCaffrey Clegg; three daughters: Alison Brockbank of Ogden, UT; Barbara C. Evans (Eric) of Centerville, UT, Mary Ellen "Emmy" C. Clancy of Orlando, FL; two younger brothers: Calvin Chipman Clegg (Gayle Muhlestein) and Charles Richard Clegg (Dixie Stallings) of Salt Lake City, Utah; grandchildren: Michael Evans, Heidi & Brett Fairborn, David & Carlee Evans, Isaac Evans, Brian Evans, Brynn Evans and Spencer Clancy; four beautiful great-granddaughters; cousins, nieces, nephews and other extended family, and many close friends. His great loves were his faith, family and friends, followed closely by his love of country and the US Constitution.
