Obituary

On October 13th, at the age of 74, Michael "Mike" Andrew, Sr. completed the course of his life. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Mike leaves a legacy of love, kindness, and success. For more than thirty years, Mike lived in Casselberry, Florida. He was born in Newark, Ohio and started his life on his parents' - James "Jimmie" M. Andrew and Virginia H. Andrew - lumber mills in Granville, Ohio and lumber yards in Land, Alabama. Mike began his prep career as a high school football player at Granville High School and attended the Greenbrier Military School in Lewisberg, West Virginia. His GMS time prepared him for service in the United States Navy, most of which was aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Randolph. Mike served as a radar and sonar man aboard the Randolph, both guiding in the ship's aircraft and supporting its submarine hunting efforts. He was also aboard when the Randolph picked up fellow Ohioan and Mercury astronaut John Glenn following his historic orbit in space in February, 1962. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Mike began a twenty-five year career in the restaurant and food services business, achieving increasing levels of management responsibilities with Tastee Freeze, Arby's, Inc., Burger Queen and Casa Gallardo, Inc. He also began his forty-five year marriage to the love of his life, Carolyn Sue "Susie" Andrew. After successfully battling a rare medical condition in the late 1980's, Mike was forced to retire from the restaurant business and ultimately embarked on a career as a rare coins historian. In 1998, he was recognized as the first person ever to identify the 100 rarest Morgan Dollars. He helped research and write a number of treatises on United States Silver Dollars. An avid camper and fisher in his early life, he never lost his love for the outdoors and as his physical challenges affected him, he traded his fishing poles for gardening tools, tending to his roses and tropical plants through the end of his life. A lifelong passion for college football, particularly his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes, shaped many of his favorite times with friends and family. For most of the past ten years, Mike was a fixture at the front door of Journey Christian Church in Apopka, where he welcomed with a smile, firm handshake and warm greeting all who arrived at the church. That smile was born of his love for God and others. All who knew him enjoyed his wit, humor, and depth of wisdom that he lovingly shared. The thing that made him smile the most was spending time with his grandchildren. Mike is survived by his wife, Susie, his brother, Tom, of Centennial, Colorado, and four children: Kathy (Max) Roesler of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Mike (Dawn) Andrew of Wayzata, Minnesota; Don (Michelle) Andrew of Lakeland, Florida; Chris Andrew of Orlando, Florida; and, his nine grandchildren - Max, Thomas, Caitlin, Brooke, Jessica, Taylor, Michael, Victoria and Reagan. He was preceded in death by his parents, James M. Andrew, Jr. and Virginia Hammond Andrew and a brother, James M. Andrew. The family would like to mention a special thanks to all his caregivers who so lovingly helped during these past several months. A memorial celebration will be at Journey Christian Church at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 19, 2015. A family only burial, with military honors, will be at the Florida National Cemetery.
