Mary E. Young

Mary Young, 92, of Altamonte Springs, FL passed away peacefully at home on September 19, 2025. She spent her last day enjoying the love and comfort of both of her daughters. Mary was born on April 8, 1933, daughter of Benjamin and Rara Conner. Her mother was a descendant of the Brewsters, who arrived in America on the Mayflower. Mary and her brother, Bill, were born and raised in Beckley, West Virginia and grew up in their maternal grandfather’s home along with her parents, uncle, and great-aunt. When Mary was eighteen years of age, the family of four (plus her paternal grandmother) moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. There she attended Carolina Business College, then began working as a secretary. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Frederick Caldwell Young. Fred and Mary wed on December 28, 1956, and remained married for exactly 44 years, with Fred passing on their wedding anniversary. They resided in Charlotte for ten years and it is there that they welcomed daughters Sheree and Karen. In 1966 the family moved to Orlando, Florida, eventually settling in Altamonte Springs. Once Mary became acclimated to her new surroundings in Florida, the family became members of The First Presbyterian Church (now named Maitland Presbyterian Church). Mary made this her home away from home. She could be found there most any day of the week. Mary was a faithful participant of the Monday Morning Prayer group, active member of Circle 8, visited homebound seniors, made care packages in S.O.S., helped with mail-out, and filled in as needed for the many activities in the church. In 1990, Mary was awarded the Presbyterian Women’s Honorary Life Membership Award. Her volunteerism extended outside of the church also. For many years she donated her time to the Meals on Wheels program and BETA house – a shelter for pregnant teens and teen moms. In 1986 Fred and Mary welcomed son-in-law George Price into their family. And in 1991 they took on the coveted role of grandparents. Mary excelled at being the grandmother of newborn twins. She loved being involved in every stage of Devon and Mark’s life. After Fred’s unexpected death in 2000, Mary soldiered on and continued to visit with her family in Charlotte, continued her volunteer work, and continued babysitting and going to all of her grandchildren’s events – dance recitals, band concerts, awards ceremonies, graduations. She especially loved family gatherings during the holidays. And she looked forward to her yearly trips to Charlotte when she and Karen would visit with extended family. Mary began to slow down in her late 80s, but her love for God, family, and friends remained steadfast. And this is how she would wish to be remembered. Although her family and friends will miss her, we have the peace and assurance that Mary is in the presence of our Lord and Savior. Mary is survived by her two daughters, Sheree Price (George) and Karen Young; two grandchildren, Devon Price of New York City and Mark Price of Boston, Mass. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Willa May Young, sister-in-law Barbara Conner, two nephews Scott Conner and Mark Conner, and niece Lynne Conner Howell, all of Matthews, NC.
