Jeanne Morris
October 28, 1943 – December 26, 2015
Jeanne died after a long struggle with cancer. Born Mary Jean Nelson in Baltimore, Maryland, Jeanne spent her early childhood in Indiana and always regarded herself as a "Hoosier" even after moving to Central Florida in the 1950s, where she attended Bishop Moore High School.
A graduate of the University of Florida, Jeanne devoted her life to helping others through charitable works with organizations ranging from the Girl Scouts to the American Cancer Society. For her service, Jeanne was recognized with a Jefferson award for Public Service.
Her main work was with the Seminole County Public Schools, where she started out as a PTA officer and school volunteer and rose to serve on the School Board for 20 years. In 2001, the Florida School Board Association awarded her the Pat Spengler Award for her "passion for improving education for all children."
A devout Catholic and long-time member of St. Mary Magdalen Church, Jeanne served on multiple boards and ministries over the decades. For over the last decade, she had concentrated her church work with the Choir and the New Beginnings Ministry. She is survived by her children Michael and Melia; her sisters Leanne, who helped care for Jeanne in her last days, and Marilyn; and is deeply grieved for by her former husband Max.
A Requiem Mass will be held for Jeanne at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Altamonte Springs on 6 January at 6 p.m, with a reception to follow in the Parish Life Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Jeanne Morris Scholarship being established at the Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools.
