Obituary

LeVerne Carlin Platt ended his earthly journey peacefully in the care of Hospice of the Comforter, Altamonte Springs, FL., on April 2, 2016. He was born to Charles Carlin and Irene (Fenton) Platt on March 21, 1930. He graduated from Bordentown High School where he lettered in basketball, football and baseball. Vern was a natural athlete and participated actively in community and church leagues into his late 40's

He joined the Navy in January, 1951, receiving his basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois. He later volunteered for submarine duty, serving off the Korean coast during that war. During this service, he received highly skilled technical training. In October, 1954, he was honorably discharged from the USN SEPACT SUBASE, New London, Conn.

Following his discharge, he completed training at Trenton Technical Institute as a Radio-Television and Communications technician. Employed with the Glenn L. Martin Company, Baltimore, Maryland, he relocated to Winter Park, FL, in 1957 after they were awarded the prime contract on the Vanguard program. In March, 1958, the first satellite was put into orbit. The Martin Company, through experience gained by personnel assigned to Vanguard, was able to continue as one of the forerunners in the field of missiles and rockets. Before his retirement from Lockheed-Martin in 1988, Vern worked on many space projects including Titan, Gemini, Saturn, Voyager and Viking.
Vern was raised in the Bordentown, NJ, Methodist Episcopal Church and in 1976 moved his membership to Asbury United Methodist Church, Maitland, FL. There he met and married his surviving spouse, Claudia Herring Platt, on June 24, 1978. He was " Dad" to her son Michael Scott Stearns (Erin) and "Papa" to granddaughters, Kendall and Courtney.

He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Platt Hammell and Aunt Joan Platt both of New Jersey. His sister Cissie and (Edward) Errickson predeceased him.
His son Bryan and daughter Ann both reside out of state. He is further survived by three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Vern was very close to his many nieces and nephews and always felt very special in their presence. He felt blessed by his multitude of friends in Florida and in North Carolina, where he spent many summers.

A Memorial service will be held Friday, April 8, 2016, at 10:00 AM, Asbury United Methodist Church, 220 W. Horatio Avenue, Maitland, FL.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in his name to the Florida Methodist Children's Home, 51 Main Street Enterprise, FL, 32725
