On June 14, 2023, Larry J McGurk passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by family. He was 79.
Larry was born in Britt, Iowa to Joe and Helen Gerdes McGurk. He spent his childhood in Iowa until leaving for college in Colorado. He graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in Business. I was in Denver that he met his wife, Janice, whom he was married to for almost 49 years.
From his teenage years, where he sold fireworks out of the back door of his Iowa home, Larry was always the salesman. He continued his passion for sales, going on to sell everything from real estate to computers to alarm systems to phones. His sales career took him and his family from Denver, CO to Sacramento, CA
and ultimately to Longwood, FL. It was in Longwood where his started his company, UAS Automation, and worked until his retirement in 2011.
While Larry was always an avid sports fan and loved cheering on his teams(especially the Denver Broncos), he was the biggest fan of watching his sons from competing in the Boy Scout Derby race to playing baseball and soccer. He was involved in his children's activities – coaching (soccer), announcing baseball (he was the voice of the Bishop Moore Hornets), fundraising, and especially cheering them on with his distinct and resounding voice. He continued to cheer his boys on while they were in college, and then continued supporting them in their own careers as Electrician, Fireman, and Businessman.
Larry absolutely loved spending time with Janice, his sons, his grandchildren and his friends. He was quick with wit and humor, and had a joke for every occasion. He loved parties and was usually the life of them.
In his retirement, he enjoyed taking daily walks, reading, grabbing breakfast with friends, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
He was a faithful parishioner of the Church of Annunciation for over 40 years where he helped lead a marriage retreat, served donuts on Sundays, volunteered for Fall Festivals, was a lector, and was the silent facilitator of The Long Retreat. He is survived by his loving wife, Janice; his sons John, Mike (Jill), Patrick (Marie); grandchildren Michael, Brielyn, Ethan and Audra; his sister Sandy Riis(Don); nephews Greg and Jeff Riis (Marcy); grand-nephews Joey and Sam and a multitude of cousins also two brothers-in-law John (Barb) and Doug MacEachin.
Services for Larry will be held on July 3, 2023 at ten o'clock at Church of the Annunciation 1020 Montgomery Road, Altamonte Springs, FL 32714. This service will be live streamed.
