Obituary

Kay Moody Buffington, 89 of Plant City, Florida, was called home to her Savior on the evening of October 5, 2023 after a long battle suffering with dementia. Kay was born in Plant City on May 30, 1934 and was the first born child to the late Frank and Hazel Moody.
Kay married Charles Thomas Johnson Jr. (Tommy) in 1953 and together they welcomed 4 beautiful children. She loved being a wife, mother and grandmother. She served her family and set a godly, loving example for all. Kay was known for her love for others and her love for the Lord. One of her true gifts was making deep lasting friendships throughout her life.
Kay earned her BA in education from USF in 1974 and taught school for a short time at Bryan School in Plant City. After the passing of her beloved Tommy, she married Herb Buffington in 1979. She moved to Knoxville, Tennessee and started a new adventure where she continued serving her family, her church, and her new extended family.
Kay is survived by her 3 children Mary Kathryn Johnson, Patricia Johnson Phillips (Jim) and Charles Thomas Johnson III (Susan). Grandchildren Whitney Phillips Hembree (John) and Lindsey Jane Rife (Jeremy); Kathryn Farrish Sawyer (Andy) and Alexandra Farrish Boggus (Cullen); and Nicholas Charles Johnson. Great grandchildren Lottie Jane and Bridger Rife; Emmalyn Kay and Nora Kate Sawyer; and Ashley, Waylon and Moses Hembree; siblings Gail Moody Kroeze (John) and John Herron Moody (Cheryl); and Herb's loving family.
She is preceded in death by her husband Charles Thomas Johnson, Jr., husband Herbert Milton Buffington, daughter Melanie Jane (Janey), her parents Hazel and Frank Moody and brother Frank Estes Moody.
A memorial celebration of our sweet Mamie's life will be held on Monday, October 16 at 1:30pm at GracePoint Church in Plant City, Florida.
