Karan Elizabeth Shults Pearson, born on July 22, 1944, in Plainfield, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at her home in Lake Mary, Florida, on January 9, 2025, with her family. She was 80 years old.
The daughter of Wilbur Shults and Madeline Jeter (Shults, Coates), Karan was one of three sisters. She was predeceased by her sister Barbara Fuller and is survived by her sister Lisa Tabor. Karan was also preceded in death by her beloved son Darryl Thomas Pearson and granddaughter Trenee' Gaskins. She leaves behind her daughters Serena Marie Pearson and Marjorie Daisy Southerland-Imzadi; grandchildren Shawn Pearson, Shanae Jones, Desiree Pearson, and Zionna Pearson-Mosley; and great-grandchildren Adam, Pharoah, Jazir, and Jamir. She was also predeceased by her great-grandchild Poseidon. She also leaves behind a plethora of cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and lifelong close friends.
Karan graduated from Plainfield High School in 1962 and pursued her passion for nursing at Newark City Hospital's nursing school, earning her Registered Nurse certification in 1965. That same year, she married Booker T. Pearson. Her thirst for knowledge led her to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Upsala College in 1980 and continue advanced studies in health, medicine, and theology at Philadelphia Biblical University and the Melvin Floyd School of Evangelism.
Karan dedicated over 40 years to the nursing profession, thriving as a visiting nurse and serving as a nurse and supervisor in correctional facilities across New Jersey and Philadelphia. Her career was marked by compassion and an unwavering commitment to caring for others.
A devoted member of First Baptist Church of Willingboro, NJ, Karan's faith guided her life. She was a survivor of cancer for over a decade and affectionately referred to herself as "Bionicmama" after undergoing multiple joint replacements.
Known for her quiet strength, courage, generosity, and determination, she opened her home to those in need and served as a mother figure to many.
Karan's legacy of kindness and resilience will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those she touched.
