Joseph Higgins, born on April 14, 1947, passed on February 20, 2025, at home surrounded by loved ones, will be remembered by his family and friends, by service to his country, and a career marked by hard work. A 1967 graduate of Waynesburg High School, Joe served two years in Germany with the U.S. Army before beginning a 30-year tenure with Equitable Gas Company and later spending 10 years as a pipeline inspector.
On December 11, 1970, he married Debbie Scott Higgins, and together they raised their daughter, Brooke Higgins of Pittsburgh. Joe's hobbies were coin collecting, watching old black-and-white TV westerns and bird watching. When his daughter played in various sports in high school and as a young adult, Joe would be seen in the audience cheering the team on.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Karen (Ralph) Wilson; his stepmother, Vicki Funk; his sister, Lois Bowlen; and numerous nieces and nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. Joe also leaves behind his kindred spirits Mya Woods and Allie Higgins whom he loved immensely. He was preceded in death by his father, James Franklin Higgins; his mother, Doris Phillips Higgins; his brother, James Higgins and sister-in-law, Sharon Higgins; his sisters, Mary Jo Shriver; Margaret Alta Higgins and Katrina Funk Vernon.
He was a life-long member of the Fairall United Methodist Church. Joe was supported and cared for by many family members and friends including Concordia Hospice and Home Instead, to whom the family extends their heartfelt thanks.
