Joseph Melvin Butler left to be with our Savior on Saturday, July 20, 2024. Joseph was 84 years old. He was surrounded by his loved ones at the time of his passing. He is survived by Anthony Butler (son), Helen Butler (sister), Felicity Butler (Grand-Daughter), and a host of family and friends.
Joseph Butler, Best known as "Melvin", was born to Joseph Henry and Bessie Rebecca (Weems) Butler on June 25, 1940 at Freemans Hospital (Now Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C.) He was 10th of 12 children. The family lived in Croom, Maryland, on a farm. Later, the family moved to Upper Marlboro, Maryland, where he attended Croom School which was a 2 room building for black students. The family, then moved to the Marlboro Pike area of Prince George's County. Joseph was a teenager when the family moved to B Street, S.E. area of Washington D.C.
Joseph, was employed at Andrews Air Force Base, Camp Springs, MD. Later, employed at Ourisman Chevrolet. Marlow Heights. In 1968, Joseph married Theresa Elaine (Smith) Butler, to them one son was born. He retired from D.C. Department of Parks and Recreations. Joseph and family, moved to Orlando, FL in 1986. Joseph was employed at Orange County Parks and Recreations, until his retirement.
Joseph enjoyed traveling the world. "Let No grass grow under your feet". Many, many, many cruises. Driving across the country. He enjoyed motor sports, cleaning his cars, and family. After retirement, they operated business of home inspection and donated school supplies in Orange County.
Joseph enjoyed family, Motor Sports, Western T.V. shows, church and talking politics. Joseph's passing was unexpected, and shocking.
