John Cochran Worley passed into the Lord's presence on January 5, 2018 at the age of 90. He was born in Cadiz, Ohio in 1927 to Judge John Grove Worley and Clara Cochran Worley. His brother David was born two years later. John and David were active outdoors men, hunting and trapping in the hills of Eastern Ohio. John graduated from Wooster College in Wooster, Ohio and went on to get a Master's Degree in geology from the University of Pittsburg. John met Carol M. Farr at Wooster, and they married in 1949. Out of their union were born Ted, Dan, and Andi. Later they adopted Mary Lou. John begin his career as a petroleum geologist with Texaco in Corpus Christi, Texas. Later he became an independent geologist for the majority of his career, also in Corpus Christi.
John continued to love the outdoors, hunting for deer and game birds in South Texas. One of his hunting goals was to bag an elk, which he accomplished in Montana. John was an avid tennis player, often playing several times each week. John was active in the Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists (SIPES). For many years, he and Carol maintained homes in Rockport, Texas and Bozeman, Montana.
John was a committed Christian and a lay leader in several United Methodist Churches. He was active in Scouting, and past president of the Six-Points Kiwanis Club in Corpus. He volunteered his time teaching Sunday School and in church ministries, including a local clothing and food mission. John supported many worthy causes such as higher education, political candidates, and world mission work. He provided his children and grandchildren with educational support.
John is survived by his wife of 68 years, Carol; his children, Ted (Sara), Dan (Karen), Andi (Chris Pierce), and Mary Lou; seven grandchildren, Ben, Katy, Bethany, Bill, Adam, Amy, Allison; and six great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his parents and his brother, David.
The family is grateful for the help given by the independent living community at The Tremont in Oviedo, FL and Spring Hills of Lake Mary in Lake Mary, FL.
A memorial service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church in Lake Mary, Florida on Sunday, February 4, at 3:30 P.M. in the afternoon. John's ashes will later be inurned at the family grave site in Cadiz, Ohio.
