Obituary

Jeanne Frances Hutchinson, 86, died peacefully on Wednesday night, August 13, 2014. Jeanne was born in St. Louis, MO on October 4, 1927 to John and Anna Firns. She was the youngest of four children (John, Wilbert and Rita, all of whom passed on before her.) Jeanne met her future husband Sheldon Hutchinson while she was still in high school and he was serving in the US Army Air Corps on leave in St. Louis during World War II. Following her graduation and his discharge from the service, the couple were married on July 27, 1946. Sheldon started his own tile business and Jeanne went to work as a typist for The Swift Company. They had two children while living in St. Louis, Alan (July 5, 1948) and Jay (May 2, 1952, passed away in 2000).

Searching for greener pastures, Sheldon moved his family to St. Petersburg, FL early in 1956. Their son Scott was born November 30, 1958. Sheldon continued his tile work and Jeanne eventually worked, in the late 1960s, as a secretary for St. Albans Church. In the late 1970s, Jeanne moved to St. Petersburg General Hospital as a lab secretary and later the switchboard operator. She stayed in that position for over 30 years.

Jeanne and Sheldon were avid bowlers and belonged to several weekly leagues for 40 years. During that time, their teams won many championships and a roomful of trophies. Jeanne also served as secretary for many of those leagues. A lifelong Democrat, Jeanne worked on the polls for more than three decades

In addition to bowling, Jeanne enjoyed knitting and spent many hours making shawls and afghans for friends and family. Working crossword puzzles was another pastime that she enjoyed.

Jeanne left St. Petersburg General in 2011 when Sheldon became ill and needed her care. He passed away June 17, 2012. After that, she came to live with Alan and his wife Dottie for the next year and a half until she also needed a level of care only professionals could provide. She eventually became a resident of the Bon Secours Assisted Living Facility.

Jeanne is survived by her sons Alan (Dottie) and Scott (Sue), grandchildren Stephen, Valerie, Sarah and Emily, sister-in-law Mary Ann Firns, nieces and nephews Carol, George, Jacquie, Will, Patrick, Kathi, Sandy, Glennon, Jane, Rob and their spouses and children. Also her brother-in-law Donald Hutchinson and his children Donna, Mark and Donnie, and sister-in-law Lois Watkins and her children Donna, Gary and Bonnie.
