Janet B. Welsh, 73 of Longwood, Florida passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2015.after an 11 year battle with breast cancer. Janet was born January 4, 1942 in the Benham community, North Carolina to Frederick and Amalie Burcham of State Road, North Carolina. She graduated from NC Women's College in Greensboro North Carolina with a major in Physical Education. From there she moved to Atlanta, Georgia where she taught in the Atlanta school system until 1974. During that time she spent several summers in curriculum development, and taped several television programs for WABE using rhythm and dance for developing coordination and for exercise.
In Atlanta she met her future husband, Earle Agnew Welsh, and they married at St. Marks Methodist on August 1, 1970, moving to Longwood in 1974. Janet is survived by her husband of 44 years Earle, their son Eric Agnew, her siblings Barbara Carol Combs, Lake Wales Florida, and William Randolph Burcham, Austin Texas, niece Barbara Combs Miller (Chris), nephew Mark Ellis Combs (Lynn), and three grand nieces.
Janet was a natural athlete, an All Western NC point guard in high school basketball, and was active in both tennis and golf for a number of years. Starting out in good physical condition and having a strong belief in God's love and His promises were instrumental in her surviving for 11 years after diagnosis of an aggressive breast cancer. Surgery, multiple chemo treatments, a caring oncologist who could pull another rabbit out of the hat when the cancer began to rear it's head again, and most of all, being bathed in the continual prayers of multiple circles of friends, sustained her over the years.
Janet will be missed by her family and friends, but will be remembered for her cheerful smile, and her empathy for those needing help. She will be remembered with a Celebration of Life on Saturday, February 21 at 2:00 PM at Community United Methodist Church, 4921 S. US Highway 17-92, Casselberry, Florida 32707. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the American Cancer Society, or to the Susan G. Komen organization.
