Obituary

The world lost one of its most beautiful souls on Wednesday, February 23rd, 2022. Ivy Brathwaite,97, went to be with the Lord and join her mother, Isabella; her father, Urban; her brother, Evans; and her sisters, Lottie, Carmen, Ena, Alma, Beulah, and Emelda.

She is survived by her children, Trevor, Courtney, Gail, and Arnim, followed by a host of grandchildren, great- grandchildren, and even great- great - grandchildren.

Ivy Brathwaite was born on January 27th, 1925, in San Fernando, Trinidad. The youngest of eight children, Ivy spent her formative years going on beach excursions with her siblings, playing sports in the park, and learning to sew. Her most fond memories, however, come from the times she spent on Chacachacare Island visiting her brother. She would glow with excitement as she recalled spending time with her siblings, interacting with soldiers from around the world who were stationed on the island, and cruising around in her brother's jeep. She often would mention that these were the "war days" and spoke about food rations and country-wide curfews. Despite all the chaos around her at the time, she still managed to portray the beauty and light of the world in her stories.

Ivy was a seamstress by profession and was revered by many for her precision and stitchwork. She hemmed skirts, replaced buttons, and made old clothes look like new well into her nineties. Out of all the remarkable things that can be said about Ivy, she is by far most famous for her cooking. Tales of her bread and sweetbread will be talked about for generations to come. Her homemade sorrel and mauby could unite a nation, and her fried bake could warm any heart.

Ivy, we will miss you for the songs you sang in your quiet moments, your hearty laugh after a joke, and the way your presence filled every room with light. Sleep easy my love, until we meet again.

The family of Ivy Brathwaite invites you to leave a message of condolence on the Tribute Wall created in her loving memory.
