Hortense Jean Hyche Jackson, age 75, died on October 17, 2019 in Winter Park, Florida.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa. On January 19, 1944 from the union of Theodore Wilbur Robinson and Hortense Eloise Lewis, Hortense Jean Robinson was known affectionately as "Jean". She was a native of Miami, Florida. She was a lifelong Episcopalian, growing up in St. Agnes Miami, and later attending Holy Covenant and St. James Baltimore, and St. Michael and All Angels Tallahassee, Florida. Jean was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School (Miami), Florida A & M University B.S., Social Work, University of Maryland School of Social Work, M.S.W., and Morgan State University, Ed.D in Educational Leadership. An avid traveler, she ventured to such places as Senegal, Ghana, Egypt, South Africa, China and Italy.

Jean served the community as a social worker and educator for more than 40 years. During her professional career she held positions at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Copping State University, Sojourner-Douglas College, Smith College of Social Work, and University of Maryland School of Social Work. Jean dedicated her life to the field of social work as she as a tireless advocate for teen pregnancy prevention through local, state and federal programming. As a social worker by training, Jean spent a lot of her profession years educating students around the country to become social workers. Additionally a great deal of her work was in support of quality of life for children and families with the City of Baltimore and State of Maryland.

Jean considered herself a student of the world, traveling to such places as Senegal, Ghana, South Africa, Egypt, Italy and China. She also took great pride in participating in tours that took high school students to visit Historically Black Colleges and Universities throughout the Middle Atlantic and South. Jean was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, and greatly appreciated their commitment to serve the community. She had great pride in her daughter Phaedra and best friend Janeen joining the sorority. Some of Jean's hobbies were watching movies; her favorite was the Godfather trilogy, which she could watch anytime. She also enjoyed the theater, reading, concerts, dancing and cooking.

Jean spent her later years in Tallahassee, Florida, fulfilling a wish of teaching at her alma mater, Florida A & M University and becoming a Daughter of the King with the Episcopal Church as other women in her family had done prior. She is survived by Phaion Hyche III, Bertha E. Hyche, Phaedra E. Hyche, Paul Gullate, Cheryl Robinson, Gil Robinson, Inez Dudley, Hallie Elam, Lynn Robinson, Jewell Robinson, Floyd Lewis Jr., Linda Lewis, Karen Johnson, Acie Williams, Walter Lewis and Sheila London.

A Memorial Service will be held 12:00 PM Friday, Nov. 1, 2019 @ The Episcopal Church of St. Michael and All Angels 2013 St Paul St, Baltimore, MD 21218.
