Harry E. Brown, age 87, of Seminole, Florida, went to be with Jesus on Sunday (his favorite day of the week), September 22, 2024 in Largo, surrounded by his loving family who were singing one of his favorite hymns Amazing Grace. Born on January 18, 1937, he was the second child of Alec and Nona Brown.
Born in Plant City, Florida, Harry grew up in Fort Myers, Florida, where in high school he played football, baseball, track and field, and was considered the most athletic in his class. When he graduated high school, he joined the Navy and served for four years, with time on the USS Bittern in Jacksonville, Florida. From there, he went to the University of Florida, where he majored in Electrical Engineering. When he graduated college, he married his sweetheart, Jeanette. In August 2024, they celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. Harry loved his wife as Christ loves the church.
Surviving family are his wife Jeanette, his brother Jerry Brown and his sister Linda Goodwin; his children Amy Harrington of Largo, Florida, Lisa Willett of Dallas, Georgia, and his son Keith Brown of Rolesville, North Carolina; grandchildren Hannah, Dawson, Madeline, Jack, Tess, Liana, and Harrison; great-grandchildren James, Charlie, and Caroline; and so many others that he loved like family.
From the late 1960s to his final day, Harry loved his Savior Jesus Christ and the Word of God. He served in the church as a discipler of all, no matter the age. He dressed up as Moses or Joseph for Sunday School classes and after-school programs. He was active in Vacation Bible School each summer, sharing Bible stories and verses with the children. He loved bringing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren to VBS.
Harry loved teaching others about Jesus. He taught Sunday School and Bible studies at church and led studies in his home, sharing his love for the Word and for God, helping and mentoring those to understand Scripture and apply it to their daily lives. He discipled men on and in the Word and mentored them on how to be better men, meeting them for breakfast or in his home on a weekly basis. Even in his last days leading up to meeting Jesus this past Sunday morning, he wrote an outline with his best friend Bill for an upcoming church Bible Study on discipleship.
Harry also loved memorizing Scripture, sending verses every day to his grandchildren, family, and many others. His command of the Scriptures would allow him to select a verse for you that resonated and applied perfectly to your struggle or challenge.
Harry loved his plants and flowers! In particular, he loved roses and orchids… but pretty much any blooming and flowering plants. He loved gardening and got his green-thumb from his dad and cultivating and growing any flowering plant was a hobby for him.
Family and friends will be received at Seminole First Baptist Church, 11045 Park Blvd, Seminole, Florida 33772, on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 10:00 AM. A family-only internment service at Bay Pines National Cemetery is planned for Monday, September 30, 2024 at 1:30 PM.
