Eugene Charles Egg LTC Ret. US ARMY, 90 of St Petersburg Florida, died on February 22, 2016.
Gene was predeceased by his wife of 48 years Jan Egg.
He is survived by sons, Edward of Columbia SC, Devon of St. Petersburg, Brian of San Francisco CA and daughter Lynn Egg Jakusovas of Sarasota.
Grandchildren Ashley, Ryan, Rachel, Joshua, Allyson and Christopher
Great Grandchildren Ryan Elizabeth and Luke.
Gene grew up in Toronto Canada and was a graduate of the University of San Francisco.
He volunteered for the US Army in 1943 during WWII, where he fought in Africa and Italy.
He was wounded north of Rome in May of 1945. He left service in March of 1946 as a Sergeant.
Gene reenlisted in 1948 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Gene had assignments as Airborne Advisor to the Greek Army from 1957-1960.
He served in Korea from 1961 � 1962. He was the Battalion Commander of 1st Battalion 509 Infantry 1967-1968.
He then served 1 year in Vietnam at MACV Headquarters in Saigon 1968-1969 under General Westmorland.
During his Army career he received many commendations, the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Services Command Medal, Army commendation medal, Master Parachutist Badge, Greek Parachutist Badge, Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart.
After retiring from his 30 years of Military service he volunteered at Bay Pines VA Hospital for 32 years and volunteered at St. Mary Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for 30 years. Gene was also instrumental in the petition drive to establish the Crescent Lake dog park.
Gene was loved by all people he met, and will be remembered for his wonderful smile as he walked his dog Sarge at Crescent Lake.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mary Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church Saturday February 27th at 1:30 pm
Full Military Honors will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington Virginia
