Obituary

Col. Edward Harold Johnston, USA, M.D. (Retired)

Passed away peacefully at home, on Wednesday, September 16th, 2015, at age 91.
He was born November 15th, 1923 in Acme, PA, a son of the late Frank C. and Anna Zelmore Johnston. Ed was a WW II veteran, having served in the US Army Medical Corp. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren, Orlando, FL. He attended medical school at Penn State University, The University of Pittsburg, The University of Pennsylvania, Baylor University and Cornell University.

He met the love of his life, Olga, in San Antonio, TX, and they married in 1955. During his career with the US Army, he was stationed in Korea, England, Thailand, and at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington D.C., where he was appointed as the first Chief of the Military Environmental Pathology Division. While working in D.C., he served as Associate Professor at Georgetown Medical School, and authored many published works.

After retiring from the military and relocating to Orlando, he and Dr. Ben Willard co-founded Willard and Johnston, P.A., in Orlando, providing pathology, lab and invoicing services for Orange Memorial Hospital, now ORHS. Before and after retiring, he had earned the love and respect of friends and colleagues, and was considered kind, generous, intelligent and caring. Throughout life, he was a person who helped take care of everybody.

Ed was an avid reader, who enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, working around the house and garden, painting, and relished in maintaining his sanctuary, 'the grove'.

Ed was preceded in death by his father and mother, Frank C. and Anna Z. Johnston, his brother William Johnston, and sister Ruth Martorana. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Olga; his sister Helen Dolan of Acme, PA; 3 daughters: Joyce Shaw and husband Jeffery of Spring, TX; Lois Goddard and husband John of Belle Isle, FL; Mariann Johnston of Orlando, FL; and grandsons John E.B. and Matthew F. Goddard; and several nieces and nephews.

Edward was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, an officer and a gentleman devoted to his family. While having many successes, accomplishments and titles in life, he will forever be remembered by many as a wonderful person and the humble 'farmer' he considered himself at heart.
