Edward Clifton passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 29, 2026, just two days shy of his 87th birthday.
Born in Washington, D.C., on October 31, 1939 to Eleanor and Poinsette Clifton, Ed grew up in Maryland. His father was a test pilot and his mother was a homemaker. From an early age, Ed found his own path through sports, where his natural athletic talent quickly set him apart. A gifted multi-sport standout, he excelled on every field and court he stepped onto earning all-star honors in football, basketball, and baseball. His prowess on the diamond led to him being drafted into the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, marking the beginning of a lifelong devotion to the game. After his professional baseball career, Ed continued his athletic journey playing semi-pro softball, competing with such distinction that he was ultimately inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame.
In July of 1969, Ed relocated to Florida, where he built a full, vibrant life and remained a resident until his passing. Beyond his athletic achievements, Ed was widely known as a passionate sports card collector. He spent decades traveling across the state attending card shows, always on the hunt for the elusive, vintage, and rare finds that kept his love for sports history alive.
Ed forged countless enduring friendships throughout his life and was widely known for his quick wit and sense of humor. To know him was to enjoy his warm presence, easygoing nature, and dependable routines.
He deeply cherished his quiet morning jogs—which comfortably shifted to morning walks in his later years—and he rarely passed up a well-earned afternoon nap.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife, Joie Clifton; his loving daughter, Debbie Franklin, and son-in-law, Steve Franklin; and his cherished grandsons, Clint Franklin and Nick Franklin, all of whom brought him immense pride.
