Edna D. Bowen, passed peacefully on November 5, 2015 at the age of 94 with her family at her side. Edna was born February 5, 1921 near Sodus, New York to John and Elizabeth Pauw Dunning, Dutch immigrants who entered the U.S. through Ellis Island. Edna had 2 brothers, John and Ray and an older sister, Jennie. Her brother Ray served as a Sgt. in the U.S. Army during WWII, where he received a Bronze Star for Valor and a Purple Heart after being killed in action in France. While in high school, Edna enjoyed the chorus group and played volleyball. She moved to Florida in the 1940's with her first husband, Karl Yost, to start a flower farm business in Sanford. Later in life she married Fred Bowen, who was a crew manager for A. Duda and Sons, and later a member of the Sanford Fire Department. Edna always enjoyed people and took up jobs at McReynold's Drug Store and later at Faust's Drug Store in downtown Sanford for many years. Upon retirement, she traveled frequently with friends to various places, including Nashville and cruises in the Caribbean, and enjoyed annual summer road trips across the country. She was also an avid gardener and used her green thumb to grow everything from cotton to petunias. She was a member of the Sanford Ladies' Elk Auxiliary and a devoted attendee of her Hardee's breakfast club. Even though she had mobility issues during her later years, she still had her zest for life and enjoyed rides around town in the sunshine and going to feed the birds on Lake Monroe. She is predeceased by her son, Ronnie, and grandson, Allan "Pepper" Yost. Edna is survived by her husband Fred J. Bowen, daughter Cheryl and her husband Mark Russi, her cherished granddaughters Jennifer and Jessica Russi, son Don Yost and his wife Janet, and niece Dorothy Decker of Newark, New York. She will be remembered as a friendly, gentle, kind soul, who always woke with a smile on her face and was known to break into song to start the day.
