Dorothy L. Wood's Obituary
Miss Dorothy Louise Wood passed peacefully from her home on earth to her Heavenly home on Sunday morning, July 6, 2025, after an extended illness.
Dorothy was born on October 26, 1924, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Her parents were Hassel and Bernice Wood. Dorothy was an only child. When she was 3 years old, her family moved to West Virginia where they lived until Dorothy graduated from college. They returned to Mt. Vernon for a few years until they moved to Orlando, Florida where she lived for the rest of her life.
Dorothy was a devoted Christian and spent her lifetime serving God as a Sunday School teacher, youth teacher, singing in the choir, singing solos, singing in small groups, and often led congregational singing. She also served on the Missions Committee of her church. Her commitment to her Lord, her faith, and to her church left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Dorothy dedicated 37 ½ years to public education. She taught 2 ½ years in Illinois and 35 years in Florida. She began her career as a classroom teacher and taught for 11 ½ years before transitioning to the role of a school librarian for 26 years. The majority of her career was spent at Audubon Park Elementary School in Orlando.
In retirement, Dorothy was able to spend time traveling, doing ceramics, solving crossword puzzles, and spending time with her friends and extended family. She enjoyed attending family gatherings and going to Brunch or Lunch with her friends.
Dorothy is survived by her cousins and second cousins, David Wood, Janea Wood, Deana Wood, Leesa Weaver, Robert Wood, Jr., Sherry Hester, and Doug Wood. She is also survived by her "adopted" family, Ed Wood, Sr, Ed Wood, Jr, Diana May, Susan Wood, and Vickie Lyons.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Dorothy on August 19, 2025, with visitation and a slideshow from 9:30 – 10 a.m. and the service beginning at 10 o'clock a.m. at Encounter Christian Church, 1140 S. Lakemont Ave., Winter Park, FL 32792. Dorothy will be laid to rest with her parents in Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, Illinois.
