Obituary

Dorothy Ann Hussey, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, of Altamonte Springs, FL, passed away peacefully at the age of 79 after a brief illness and a courageous three-year battle with multiple myeloma. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.

Dorothy was born in 1946 in New York to Clifford and Margarete Schmitt, the oldest offour children. She attended Clarke High School in Westbury, New York, where she excelled in Music, Art, and Typing. She married Gardner Hussey in 1972 and together they lived in Westbury New York, Tucson Arizona, Mission Viejo California, and Altamonte Springs, Florida. They raised their two daughters in Westbury, Mission Viejo, and Altamonte Springs.

Dorothy learned her work ethic by observing her father’s example. She recently retired from Walker and Company, where she served as an executive assistant for 30 years. She also worked at her church as an assistant in the music program, helping to plan services, prepare for rehearsals, and organize the annual summer children’s music camp.

Dorothy exemplified steadfast faith in Jesus Christ until her last breath. As a child, she was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. She re-dedicated her life to Christ and was baptized by immersion in 1985 at Mission Viejo Christian Church. She led both of her daughters to faith and baptism in 1989. Believing that service to others was an outward expression of faith, Dorothy was a faithful volunteer in various church ministries.

Dorothy had a beautiful singing voice and blessed countless people with her gift, especially in the congregations where she served in the choir, as a special music soloist, and as a worship leader. Dorothy was also a gifted artist. Many of the paintings that decorated her homes throughout her adult life were her own and are now serve as lasting memories of her. In the last several years she developed an appreciation for the artistic style of the Florida Highwaymen. She loved their vibrant depictions of Florida landscapes and was inspired to learn and practice the style herself, attending workshops and gatherings, even meeting a few of the artists. Several of her more recent paintings are in the style of the Highwaymen and are stunning. She instilled her love and appreciation for music and the arts in both of her daughters, who have carried that legacy forward into their own lives and families.

Dorothy enjoyed going on cruises to exotic locations and often cruised with groups of family and friends. She loved staying active by walking, doing yoga, and participating in water aerobics at the Westmonte pool. She made friends everywhere she went and in every activity she participated in, and friends could always count on her presence and support through life’s highs and lows. She cherished any time she could spend with her loved ones, frequently hosting “Family Circus” dinners that involved lots of cheese and crackers and laughter. She adored and was especially proud of her three grandchildren and was present for as many of their events and milestones as she could attend nomatter where they were.

Dorothy is survived by her husband of nearly 55 years, Gardner, loving sister Barbara Hauck (Russel) and brother Clifford “Skip” Schmitt, devoted daughters, Bethany Ingerham (Joe) and Rachel Boldman (Josh), and her beloved grandchildren KevinTaylor Holloway (Annie), Kendalyn Rose Holloway, and Ezekiel David Boldman. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family, friends, and cherished loved ones whose lives she touched and who will miss her deeply.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Margarete and Clifford Schmitt, brother, John Schmitt, and other family and friends who welcomed her with open arms when she transitioned to heaven.
