In Remembrance Of
Dora C. Herschel

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Dora Carrie Herschel ('Dee'). Mom died on September 16, 2023.

Dora was born on July 8, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Herman Louis Scheetz, Jr. and Rowena Orrell Scheetz. She was one of three children and was raised by her paternal grandparents Herman and Carrie Scheetz along with five uncles. Dora attended William Bartram High School and graduated in 1943. After graduation she worked for I.T.E. (Inverse Time Element) a maker of low voltage circuit breakers.

On December 7, 1945, she married a dashing naval pilot, Leon Rex Grover, Jr. ('Bill') and together they had three children, Leon Rex Grover, III, Linda Lee Grover, and Jane Ellen Grover. Their last duty station was in Sanford, Florida when in 1954 her beloved Bill was killed in a refueling mission in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Lebanon.

Known affectionately as 'Dee' she was introduced by friends to the handsome William Edward Herschel ('Bill'). Together they shared a love for music, singing and little theatre. They married on January 6, 1956, and moved to Winter Park, Florida. There they welcomed two more children, Debra Gail Herschel and Kimberly Dawn Herschel. Sadly, Bill passed away in 1970.

Dee had great hardships in life, but she was ever the optimist and always thought positively. She imparted a great love for music, singing, sports, scouting, baking, 'good' chocolate, roller coasters, the beach, gardening, handcrafts, needlework, card and board games and puzzles to her children. She had them involved in so many activities growing up. She worked with the Orange County School District from 1972 until 1990 as a librarian and teacher's aide. She was a devoted follower of the University of Florida Gators and Miami Dolphins. She knew all the players and plays and would frequently shout out to the coaches what play they should call next. She enjoyed playing in multiple bridge groups for many years.

Dee was a charter member of the Winter Park Presbyterian Church where she served on many committees and later became a deacon. Her children knew they could not do anything fun on Sunday unless they went to church or Sunday school. Her counted cross stitch of The Last Supper still hangs in the church sanctuary hall.

Through the years Dee loved to travel. She traveled to see family relatives wherever they lived. She attended most of her high school reunions until the 65th anniversary. She enjoyed taking cruises with her father Herman and mother-in-law Mabel Herschel. She also had many friends that she liked to travel with and ventured on several exciting national and international trips always sending postcards and bringing back souvenirs to her children.

Nothing meant more to Dee than to have family and friends come visit. Her home, known affectionately as "The Herschel Hotel" was the central gathering place for many visitors and for all of life's celebrations and holidays with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mom was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Herman and William (and his wife Wilma), brother-in-law John W. Grover, sister-in-law, Helen 'Hennie' Sciacca, her two husbands, granddaughter Shawna Corun and great grandson Jaxson. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her son Rex Grover, daughters Linda (Art) Stackpole, Jane (John) Pope, Debra (Phil) Symes, and Kim (Bill) Richardson as well as her 'special' son Jeff Aurand. Her grandchildren Christie Grover, Lee (Ashley) Grover, Jennifer (Kris) Kircher, Rick Corun, Bryon (Lori) Stackpole, Stacy (Keith) Moore, Courtney (Wileen) Pope, Christen (Ron) Sanders, Kelly Pope, Geoffrey Symes, Aimee Symes (Nick), Mark Symes and Seth (Nora) Aurand. Her great grandchildren Nicholas, Jason and Christopher Rivera-Grover, Christopher and Sophia Stackpole, Wade Corun, Juliette and Genevieve Pope, Albert, Esmee, Vianna Puddy and their baby brother due any day, Bentley, Savannah and Myra Aurand. She is also survived by several nieces.

In lieu of flowers it was Dee's final wish that you take someone to lunch in her memory. She was a one of a kind all around lovely and kind person. She was so loved and is so missed.
