Donald Alan McMullen - Don as he preferred to be called, passed away in Bell Canyon, California on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at the age of 64. Don was born in 1961 in Saint Petersburg, Florida to Donald and Priscilla McMullen. Don graduated from Saint Petersburg High School in 1979.
Upon graduation Don pursued a career in law enforcement that spanned the rest of his life. In the early years of his career Don gained experience in patrol, canine handling, detention and corrections work. In the late 1980s Don went to work for Clearwater Police starting in patrol, then moving up to undercover vice, and patrol supervisor among other duties.
In 1993, after a line of duty injury, Don retired from police work and started his career with the federal government doing investigation work, first with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and then aviation security specialist with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Don was considered one of the leading experts in aviation security in the United States. After September 11, 2001 Don was asked to lead southern California airport security. After the creation of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and then the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Don became the Assistant Federal Security Director of Law Enforcement for Los Angeles International Airport, where he stayed for 17 years. During that time, Don was the DHS representative to the Joint Terrorist Task Force for southern California working with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies for national security.
After 25 years Don retired from the federal government, but continued to work as a private contractor for the State Department as a background investigator. Wanting to stay active Don went to work for the Los Angeles Police Department in the Office of Inspector General in 2019 and was still employed with LAPD at the time of his death.
In his spare time Don enjoyed traveling and exploring. Some of his favorite past times were trivia, classic cars, movies and music, his favorite being jazz music. Don was musically gifted and played the trumpet, saxophone, trombone, and the piano. In the 1980s Don played the trumpet in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Band, a volunteer band where he performed at all the home games. Don also loved boating and getting out on the water anytime he could.
Don is survived by his wife of 33 years, Stacey McMullen (Hern), his father Donald V. McMullen, his sister Cynthia McMullen Behrens-Boga and her husband John Boga, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his mother Priscilla McMullen (2014); his sisters Diane Till (2017); Deborah McMullen Dyke (2024).
