Donald G. Kenney, 79, of Gulfport, Fla. (formerly of Marlborough, Mass.), died on August 13, 2014, surrounded by his family. Don was the beloved husband of Louise (nee Rokes); loving father of Valerie Kenney, Mark (Rita) Kenney, and Jonathan (Nancy) Kenney and step-father of John ODay, Teri ODay, and Kathy (Bob) Geer; and adoring grandfather of eight. Don is also survived by his sister, Marti (Ray) Kosh. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Kenney.
Don was a professional bass player and jazz aficionado for more than sixty years; music was his career and his life. Over the years he toured with Lester Lanin, Charlie Barnett, and Ruby Braff. He played with the New Black Eagle Jazz Band for more than thirty years. Among other venues, Don played the Newport Jazz Festival and the Sun Coast Jazz Festival. After retiring to Gulfport, Don played with the Rhythm Kings and other bands. Like many musicians, Don held day jobs that were secondary to his music career. He once told an interviewer Im also a property manager, a Realtor, a salesman, but first, last, and always, I make music. Don described making music as an act of spirituality and said that when my time on this earth is ended Ill leave with no regrets, only gratitude.
