Command Sergeant Major Stephen Andrew Devereux Jr. US Army, Retired, of Coatesville, PA passed away at the age of 81 on Friday, April 25th 2014 at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, FL.
Steve proudly served his country with honor and distinction in the U.S. Army for 35 years. There was nothing he enjoyed more than soldiering, advocating for and mentoring the nation�s men and women serving under him. Loyalty, dedication and selfless service were just a few of his hallmark qualities. His assignments brought him to many destinations both in conflict and in times of peace: the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Gelnhausen Germany, Garmisch Germany as the commanding SGM of AFRC-Europe, Izmir Turkey with NATO-Land Southeast, many assignments stateside to include Fort Indiantown Gap, the Pentagon and finally an assignment as the Garrison CSM of Ft. AP Hill, Virginia. His military awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit. In addition to his military service, Steve served as a part time police officer with the Coatesville Police Department and helped run the family farm in Sadsburyville, PA.
He is survived by Thi, his loving wife of 50 years, their seven children John Devereux, CSM (Ret) John Leese, Phillip Devereux, Ann Devereux, LTC (Ret), Margaret Devereux, CDR Stephen A. Devereux III, Rose Sulley, sixteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service with Full Military Honors is scheduled for Arlington National Cemetery, the details of which will be announced on this memorial page in the near future. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Wounded Warrior Fund in CSM Devereux�s name.
