Dr. Charles L. Park, Jr.
April 23, 1925-July 12, 2016
Dr. Charles Park, 91, was born April 23, 1925, and passed away peacefully on July 12, 2016. He was born in Sanford and lived and practiced medicine there for most of his life. He married his childhood sweetheart Kathryn Wiggins Park, also of Sanford, in 1948.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Naval Science in South Carolina and was then commissioned as a Navy Line Officer. He served aboard the U.S.S. Goldfinch (AMS-12) in various capacities and as acting commanding officer. Following his discharge, he attended Emory University School of Medicine where he earned his M.D. degree. He completed his surgical training at the University of Florida, where in his final year, he was Chief Surgical Resident. He and his father, Charles L. Park, Sr. practiced medicine in Sanford for a combined total of 50 years.
He enjoyed golf, fishing, his Labrador retrievers, and telling stories – many of which are recounted in his humorous memoir "True Grits…What Else?". Dr. Park is survived by his four children, daughters Sydney, Renea, and Leslie, son Charles (Bubba); his brothers Robert and Will; six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and his beloved caregiver Emma Cooper Peterson.
Arrangements by DeGusipe Funeral Home. A memorial service is scheduled at 11:00 am, Monday, July 18 at Central Baptist Church, 3101 West SR46 , Sanford, FL.
