Obituary

Ben Tavera, of Longwood, Florida, passed away, Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at his home.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, who was his partner of 15 years and wife of 5 years. He is also survived by his daughter Gloria Tavera, son Matt Tavera, stepchildren Kim, Susan, Brian and Steven, his sisters Raquel and Ruth, brothers Florentino and David and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. Ben was a loving father, husband and friend to all.

Ben was born in Puebla, Mexico, to leaders of The United Methodist Church. As a young man, Ben traveled to study at the University of Evansville in Indiana, earning a political science degree. He continued his education at the University of Florida and Rollins College. He immigrated to the United States, becoming a citizen and serving as a member of the Army in the Persian Gulf War. He returned home suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which he managed successfully for many years, incorporating mediation and contemplative prayer into his life. Ben became a member of the Roman Catholic Church at Annunciation in 2005. He also enjoyed biking, swimming and working out at the gym.

Ben was a versatile musician, bringing liveliness and joy to many gatherings and in his own home with piano, guitar and accordion. He was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. A perennial student, some of Ben's favorite topics were international relations, philosophy and religion.

It is with overwhelming sadness that his family faces the loss of their beloved philosopher, musician and dreamer.
