Alvin H. Hooper

Alvin Henry Hooper was born on November 11, 1926 to JB and Althea Hooper in Winter Park, FL. Upon graduating from Winter Park High School, he chose to forgo a baseball scholarship to Rollins College instead, devoting those years in service to his country as a member of the Coast Guard during WWII, where he saw action in the both the European and Pacific Theaters. This member of the "greatest generation" would have many uses for those skills honed fighting the war to gallantly battle two fierce diseases, Parkinson's and Multiple Myeloma, before he was called home on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. He began his 42 year career as a US Postal worker in 1947, beginning as a bicycle letter carrier and moving through the system to eventually become head accident investigator. One advantage of working those years at the Post Office was Al never met a stranger, he literally knew and remembered by name, everyone who lived between Rollins College and Winter Park Hospital. During those early years, he met, courted then married the love of his life, Marguerite Fowler on March 19, 1949. Their union was blessed with 4 children, Charles (Dian), Suzan Hutchinson, Gregory (Saralu) and Theodore (Christie) which in turn produced 8 grandchildren. In addition to his career and family duties, Al was first and foremost a devoted Christian. He taught Sunday School and served many years as a deacon at Killarney Baptist Church. Al was instrumental in the development of Winter Park Little League, American Legion Baseball, was Scout Master of Troup 39 at Winter Park Congregational Church, Scout Master of Troup 64 at Winter Park Presbyterian Church, co-founded troop 614 at Eastbrooke Elementary School and served as a volunteer member of the Winter Park Fire Dept. He was a lifelong lover of the great outdoors, pursuing his favorite hobbies salt water fishing and hunting. Al was preceded in death by his parents, older brother Howard and Grandson Brady. He is additionally survived by his youngest brother JB Hooper Junior (Rose) and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will celebrated Friday, March 11, 2011 at Killarney Baptist Church 701 Formosa Avenue Winter Park, FL 32789 at 10AM. Arrangements entrusted to DeGusipe Funeral Home & Crematory.
