Sonia Ivelisse Goveo

Sonia Ivelisse nació en Bayamón, Puerto Rico, la segunda de las tres hijas de Benito Goveo Reyes y Alicia Rivera Miranda. Ivy, como la llamábamos todos, pasó su niñez entre la urbanización Hermanas Dávila y el Barrio Cerro Gordo de Bayamón cuidando como una segunda madre de su hermana mayor Vanessa Ivette y su hermanita más pequeña, su querendona, Lourdes Ivonne.
Amada y abnegada esposa de Rubén Merced Merced por más de 46 años, Ivy y Ruben sintetizaron a perfección el ideal matrimonial de que dos carnes se convierten en una. Crió a sus hijos, Rubén, David y Elisabet, y a su nieto David, Jr. con amorosa disciplina y ofreciendo su mano solidaria (y también su opinión) frecuentemente.
Fiel creyente de su Señor y Salvador Cristo Jesús, Ivy fue miembro de los Discípulos de Cristo desde que ella se convirtió en la ICDC Calle Comerío de Bayamón. De allí pasó a ICDC Bo. Cerro Gordo de Bayamón donde fue maestra de escuela bíblica, presidenta de Educación Cristiana, y junto a su esposo Rubén fueron los consejeros de la Confraternidad de jóvenes. Al mudarse a Vega Baja se trasladaron a la ICDC Vega Baja Lakes donde también fue maestra de escuela bíblica y presidenta del Comité de Propiedad. En la ICDC Ceiba Carmelita de Vega Baja también ejerció su amado ministerio de maestra de escuela bíblica. Finalmente, al mudarse al estado de Florida se incorporó a la ICHDC en Casselberry al norte de Orlando.
Ivy se destacó toda su vida por su alegría y espíritu gregario y servicial, evidenciado en el sinnúmero de ocasiones en las que ayudó a familiares, amistades, y hermanos y hermanas de la congregación. Cuidó de su amada Titi Lola en su propio hogar hasta que Lola partió con el Señor. Crió a su nieto como su propio hijo, y, con sus hermanas, cuidó de sus padres con dedicación, amor y ternura, hasta el final de los días de ambos. Su hogar siempre tuvo las puertas abiertas, y nunca faltó su deliciosa ensalada de papa en cualquier evento familiar junto con el sabroso arroz con gandules de "papa" Rubén.
Luego de que Alicia y Benito fueran a morar con el Señor, Ivy y Rubén cumplieron su sueño de retirarse en el estado de la Florida. Allá establecieron un bello hogar rodeados de sus hijos y vieron a David Jr. graduarse de escuela superior el año pasado. Viajaron a menudo, incluyendo unos viajes de ensueño a Europa. Su vida fue una de mucho trabajo para echar a su familia hacia adelante, colmada de amor de familia y amigos. Su súbita partida, víctima del coronavirus, nos afecta sobremanera y aunque sentimos el dolor de su partida, estamos confiados, como ella lo estaba, en que está en la Paz de su Señor. Todos los que la amamos, y somos muchos, la extrañaremos indeleblemente.

Sonia Ivelisse was born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, the second of Benito Goveo Reyes' and Alicia Rivera Miranda's three daughters. Ivy, as we all called her, grew between her parents' home in Hermanas Davila, and Benito's family home in Barrio Cerro Gordo in Bayamón. From her earliest days, Ivy acted as a second mother to her older sister Vanessa Ivette and her younger sister, her darling Lourdes Ivonne.
Beloved wife of Rubén Merced Merced for more than 46 years, Ivy and Ruben perfectly synthesized the marriage ideal that two bodies become one. She raised her children, Ruben, David, and Elisabet, and her grandson David, Jr., with loving discipline and frequently offering a supportive (and often opinionated) hand.
A faithful believer in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Ivy was a member of the Disciples of Christ denomination beginning at the ICDC in Calle Comerío, Bayamón. From there, she joined ICDC Bo. Cerro Gordo de Bayamón where she was a Bible school teacher, president of Christian Education, and along with her husband Rubén, counselors of the Youth Fellowship. Upon moving to Vega Baja, they joined ICDC Vega Baja Lakes where she was also a Bible school teacher and Chair of the Property Committee. At the ICDC Ceiba Carmelita de Vega Baja she also practiced her beloved ministry as a Bible school teacher. Eventually, moving to the state of Florida, she joined ICHDC in Casselberry north of Orlando.
Ivy stood out all her life for her joyful, gregarious, and helpful spirit, evidenced in the countless occasions in which she helped family members, friends, and brothers and sisters of the congregation. She cared for her beloved Titi Lola in her own home until Lola left to be with the Lord. She raised her grandson as her own son, and, with her sisters, cared for her parents with dedication, love, and tenderness, until the end of their days. The doors of her home were always flung wide open, and her delicious potato salad was never lacking at any family event along with the tasty rice with pigeon peas from "papa" Rubén.
After Alicia and Benito went to dwell with the Lord, Ivy and Rubén fulfilled their dream of retiring to the state of Florida. There, they established a beautiful home surrounded by their children and saw David Jr. graduate from high school last year. They traveled often, including dream trips to Europe. Her life was one of hard work to propel her family forward, filled with love from family and friends. Her sudden departure, victim of the coronavirus, affects us greatly and although we feel the pain of her departure, we are confident, as she was, that she is in the Peace of her Lord. All of us who love her, and we are many, will miss her indelibly.
