Dr. David Burman Olson
April 27, 1933 - April 5, 2022
Dr. David Burman Olson (Dave) went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 5, 2022, in Orlando, Florida. He was born on April 27,1933, in Shaker Heights, Ohio, to Hjalmar Olson and Ruth Burman. He attended Ohio State University where he graduated early and lettered in fencing. After completing dental school at Case Western Reserve, he served in the United States Air Force as a Captain and a dentist. Following his service in the Air Force, he attended the University of Illinois where he earned his degree in orthodontics. After graduation, Dave moved to Miami and began practicing. It was there that he met Mary Spruell on a blind date sailing in Biscayne Bay. He had no idea how to sail or swim. The wind stopped, and they were stuck for hours on the water. Little did he know then that he and Mary would be stuck together forevermore. Dave moved to Orlando to practice in 1963 and was one of only six orthodontists in the Orlando area at the time. He became exceptionally good friends with many referring dentists and others in the dental community. During his 30 years in practice, he treated thousands of patients, leaving a lasting impression on them and their families. In 1964, Dave married Mary, and they spent 57 wonderful years together enjoying cherished time with family and friends. They were blessed to be able to travel the country and the world, visiting most of the US, Europe and Australia as well as spending time in New Smyrna Beach. He always took a big bag of books with him on a vacation….the bag was seldom opened! Dave was often the “car parker” for gatherings at their home, figuring out exactly how to maximize the number of cars that could be parked in the yard and even bringing cars to the front door when an event was over or if someone needed help. On more than one occasion, he was even offered a tip! Dave was a member of the Florida Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists and served as President of the Florida Association of Orthodontists. He was an active member of the North Orlando Kiwanis Club for over 25 years and a member of the Country Club of Orlando for over 50 years. Dave was also a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church for over 50 years where he served on the Vestry, picked up food weekly for the Gathering, and was known as the “Doughnut Man” for picking up doughnuts for coffee hour each Sunday. Dave is survived by his wife, Mary, and two children, Erik Olson (Ronda), and Karin Banks (Larry). He was so proud of his seven grandchildren: Rachel Olson, Elizabeth Olson and Erik Olson II, Stephen Banks, Michael Banks, Molly Banks and Brody Banks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Orlando Union Rescue Mission at 1521 W. Washington Street, Orlando, FL 32805 or St. Michael’s Episcopal Church at 2499 N. Westmoreland Dr. Orlando, FL 32804. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church.
