Charles A. Meyer Jr.
December 1, 1936 - September 27, 2021
Charles A. Meyer, Jr. (Chuck) passed away on September 27, 2021 at 84 years old. Chuck, an Orlando native, was the son of Jan and Charlie Meyer and grew up on Par Avenue across from Dubsdread Country Club. At a young age, Chuck had a spirit like no other. He loved pulling pranks on people and riding his bike on the streets of College Park with his pet raccoon perched on the handle bars. Only Chuck would prefer a pet raccoon over a cat or dog! As a teenager, Chuck fell in love with the beautiful Sissy Slemons which was the beginning of a storied 66 year marriage. Together they raised five children, Chip (Dianne), Jim (Anna), Mary (Steve), Sissy (Bob) and Jan (Charles). His pride and joy were his 13 grandchildren Stephanie, Kassandra, Carlos, Lauren, Jenna, Charlie, Brittanie, Ella, Justin, Amanda, Mac, Charlie and Beck, and 2 great grandchildren, J.T. and Anna Gray. He is also survived by his sister, Jan Moss, of Orlando. Chuck graduated from Edgewater High School and went to the University of Florida. However, his college days were cut short when he married the love of his life, Sissy Slemons. When Chuck was 18 and Sissy was 16, they headed to Folkston, Georgia and eloped. No one knew they were married, but the word finally came out. Chuck and Sissy eventually moved back home to Orlando where Chuck worked in his father’s company, C.A. Meyer Paving & Construction Co. After his father died, Chuck took over the business at a young age and grew it to one of the largest paving contractors in the area. He worked on many projects around Orlando and the state of Florida including Walt Disney World, Universal Studios Florida, Kennedy Space Center, the Florida Turnpike, Orlando International Airport, Grand Cypress Resort and many of Central Florida’s neighborhood communities. He truly had a passion for construction and enjoyed the challenge of finding solutions to a problem. It was often said if you could only pick one person to be on a deserted island with, it would be Chuck Meyer because he would find a way off! Chuck worked very hard but spent his spare time doing things he loved. He was adventurous and fearless—Sissy nicknamed him Indiana Jones. Whether it was skiing the mountains of Colorado, traveling abroad, hunting in exotic places, or zipping to the Bahamas in his boat "Not So Macho," Chuck lived life to the fullest. He shared many of these experiences with his wife, Sissy, and their children and grandchildren. There was also the side of Chuck that loved gardening, antique cars and playing the ukulele. Most Saturdays, you would see him in his straw hat driving his orange Kubota around the yard. Only Chuck could grow amazing collard and mustard greens among his beautiful showcase of flowers. Chuck had an overwhelming generosity that extended to many of his employees, business partners and family friends. He always supported individuals who showed the potential to do great things. Although he never sought recognition, he sent countless area kids to college paying their tuition and generously donated construction services or financially to many Orlando area churches, schools and non-profit organizations. In recent years, Chuck faced limitations and decline due to Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. We are thankful to all of his wonderful caretakers for their comfort and support. We are blessed to know that Chuck is in perfect Heaven living a vibrant life once again. There are so many fun and special memories about Chuck, it is difficult to include them all. Memories are stories a family writes together and we have a beautiful story! There will be a a private family graveside service at a future date. A memorial celebration for Chuck will be held at the Country Club of Orlando on Friday, October 8, 2021 from 4pm-6pm. Please feel free to come by to share your personal connection with Chuck during this time. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Chuck’s memory to Advent Health Hospice Care of Central Florida or the Alzheimer’s Association. The family of Charles A. Meyer, Jr. invites you to leave a message of condolence on the Tribute Wall created in his memory.
