Yolanda Alicia Protzel, nuestra maravillosa madre que personificaba lo que era amar incondicionalmente; dejo este mundo en paz rodeada de su familia, el 14 de abril de 2025. Nacio el 10 de febrero de 1935 en Cuzco (Perú), hija de César y Alicia Pinedo, Yolanda guardó durante toda su vida recuerdos entrañables de su infancia en la Hacienda Colca de la provincia de Quillabamba, enclavada en las verdes montañas de los Andes. Allí desarrolló su gracia y su arte de forma autodidacta, gustaba realizar gimnasia, practicar danzas andinas tradicionales, la primera de las muchas actividades que definirían su espíritu emprendedor. Como madre y esposa de un oficial del Ejercito del Peru, Yolanda se trasladó a Lima, dedicándose a criar a sus hijas. Siempre con la inquietud de aprender logro emprender muchas actividades que podia realizar fuera de casa para apoyar el desarrollo de sus hijas; entre ellas, cosmetologia, y cursos de cocina y reposteria. Su viaje de vida la llevo a Piura en 1966, donde expandio sus conocimientos y entre otros, obtuvo el título de Enfermera Práctica enrolandose en la Cruz Roja Peruana, donde tuvo una destacada labor durante el tragico terremoto de 1970 en Huaraz, Peru. Yolanda regresó a Lima en 1971, donde continuo creando un hogar cálido, elegante y acogedor en el Distrito de Miraflores. Su hogar siempre fue el centro de reuniones de amistades y framiliares brindando un calida atención a todos. Yolanda dominó el arte de la cocina peruana, transmitiendo sus conocimientos a sus hijas y nietos como su abuelita Anita lo hizo antes con ella. Sus famosas "sopitas" y recetas bellamente emplatadas se convirtieron en recipientes de historias familiares y patrimonio cultural. Mami aprendio a tejer y bordar muy bonito, y le gustaba hacer arreglos de flores, donde se tomaba su tiempo en crear pedazitos de arte. Eventualmente, cuando sus hijas empezaron a establecerse en el extranjero, Yolanda dividio su tiempo entre los Estados Unidos, Peru, Venezuela y Canada. Llevo consigo su determinación y su propósito de cuidar de los demás, y ayudo a sus hijas a criar a sus nietos y atender sus hogares. Yolanda pudo compartir sus dones con muchas familias y amigos y se convirtió en una orgullosa ciudadana estadounidense en 1997. Ademas de hablar español, Mami hablaba en Quechua y aprendio Ingles. El papel de la "Mamamama" con diez nietos y doce bisnietos, le trajo gran alegría y deja un legado profundo en nuestra familia. Con manos suaves que guardaban una sabiduría ancestral, daba el primer baño a cada uno de sus nietos y bisnietos. La presencia de Mamamama durante los primeros momentos con los miembros más jóvenes de su familia aportó no sólo ayuda práctica, sino un profundo sentido de seguridad. En sus últimos años, Yolanda vivió en Orlando, Florida, y siguió cocinando, leyendo, disfrutando de sus juegos de cartas y viajando para estar con su extensa familia. Cuando su salud empeoró, se trasladó a un hermoso centro de cuidados en Winter Garden, donde su espíritu bondadoso conmovió a todos los que la rodeaban. Tanto el personal como los residentes estaban encantados con las visitas diarias de su familia y se sentían atraídos por su amor y bondad inherentes, que permanecían incluso cuando sus recuerdos se desvanecían. El legado de Mamamama es de amor y cuidado eternos. Nos enseñó que la verdadera riqueza es el amor que se da libremente. Paciente, amable y cariñosa, su espíritu sigue vivo en cada reunión familiar, en cada plato peruano preparado por sus descendientes y en los valores que unen a su familia y amigos a través de generaciones y continentes. A Yolanda le sobreviven sus hijas Eliana, Ana, Marianella y Karen; sus yernos Rubén, Christopher, Edesio y Jon; sus nietos Charisse, Yvette, Claudia, Marianella, Alicia, Luis Edesio, Mauricio, Alfredo, Fabián y sus respectivas parejas, quienes amaron y apreciaron entrañablemente a su Mamamama; bisnietos Adrian, Isla, Vincent, Julian, Christian, Emily, Jocelyn, Fabian, Arturo, y Larissa; y hermanas Luz Marina y Doris, y una gran familia extensa de primos, sobrinas y sobrinos en su querido Peru. Falleció antes su esposo Otto Protzel, sus queridos hermanos Luis, Rosa, Washington, Tula y Lisbeth, su apreciado yerno Alfredo y su amado nieto Nickolas. Born on February 10, 1935, in Cuzco, Peru to Cesar and Alicia Pinedo, Yolanda carried lifelong cherished memories of her childhood at La Hacienda Colca in Quillabamba, a province nestled in the verdant lower Andes mountains. There, she developed grace and artistry through self-taught determination, performing traditional Andean dance and gymnastics — her first of many pursuits that would define her resourceful spirit. Upon becoming a young mother and a Peruvian Army wife, Yolanda moved to Lima, dedicating herself to raising her four daughters. Driven by her passion for learning, she pursued various activities beyond the household that contributed to her daughters' development—including courses in cosmetology, cooking, and baking. Her journey took her to Piura, where she earned a certification as a practical nurse through the Peruvian Red Cross, receiving recognition for distinguished service during the tragic 1970 earthquake in Huaraz, Peru. She returned to Lima in 1971, where she worked as an esthetician. She created a warm, elegant, and welcoming home in Miraflores, hosting memorable gatherings for friends and family with graceful attention to detail. Yolanda mastered the art of Peruvian cooking, spending countless hours in the kitchen, and passing her knowledge to her children and grandchildren as her grandmother Anita before her. Her famous “sopitas” and beautifully plated dishes became vessels for family stories and cultural heritage. She also learned to knit and embroider beautifully, and loved making flower arrangements, where she took her time creating little pieces of art. Her daughters eventually settled abroad, leading Yolanda to divide her time between the United States, Peru, Venezuela, and Canada. She carried her determination and nurturing spirit wherever she went, helping her daughters with their children and homes. She proudly became a U.S. citizen in 1997. Beyond her native Spanish, she was fluent in Quechua and English. The role of “Mamamama” to ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren brought her great joy and has left a profound legacy. With gentle hands that held ancient wisdom, she gave the first bath to each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a ritual that symbolized the passing of Peruvian traditions across generations. Mamamama’s presence during precious early moments with the youngest members of her family brought not only practical help but a profound sense of security and continuity to their mothers and fathers. In her final years, Yolanda lived in Orlando, Florida, continuing to cook, enjoying her games, knitting, embroidery, telenovelas, and traveling to be with her extended family. As her health declined, she moved to a beautiful care center in Winter Garden, where her gentle spirit touched everyone around her. Staff and residents alike were delighted by daily visits from her family and drawn to her inherent love and kindness, which remained even as her memories faded. Mamamama’s legacy is one of undying love and care. She taught us that true wealth is love freely given. Patient, kind, and loving, her spirit lives on in each family gathering, in every Peruvian dish prepared by her descendants, and in the values that bind her family and friends across generations and continents. Yolanda is survived by her daughters Eliana, Ana, Marianella, and Karen; sons-in-law Ruben, Christopher, Edesio, and Jon; grandchildren Charisse, Yvette, Claudia, Marianella, Alicia, Luis Edesio, Mauricio, Alfredo, Fabian, and their respective spouses; great-grandchildren Adrian, Isla, Vincent, Julian, Christian, Emily, Jocelyn, Fabian, Arturo, and Larissa; and sisters Luz Marina and Doris, and a large extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews in her beloved Peru. She was predeceased by her husband Otto, siblings Luis, Rosa, Washington, Tula, and Lisbeth, son-in-law Alfredo, and grandson Nickolas. A celebration of life will be held Monday, April 21, 2025, 3-5 p.m. EDT at DeGusipe Funeral Home, 1400 Matthew Paris Blvd, Ocoee, FL 34761. A virtual option will be available.
