William Diaz Santiago

William “Willie” Diaz Santiago, 76, of Pinellas Park, FL passed away the morning of March 13 th , 2022 in his daughter’s home in Dunedin, FL. He was born on July 11, 1945, in Utuado, Puerto Rico to parents Ofelio Santiago and Inez Diaz. He moved to Brooklyn, New York as a young child where he later began his career as a postal worker. He transferred to the Pinellas Park post office in the late 80s where he lived and worked as a letter carrier for several years. Recently, William resided at Grand Villa of Dunedin where he made many friends among the residents and caring staff. He is survived by 3 daughters Cynthia, Kimberly, and Michele, 5 grandchildren Madison, Patrick, Shalyn, Sienah, and Ellise and great grandson Matthew. He is also survived by a brother Abner Santiago and a sister Lillian Haywood. He was preceded in death by sister Haydee Rosario and brother Anibal Santiago. William was a proud US Army Veteran and actively served in combat in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Additionally, he was a Knights of Columbus member and an active parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pinellas Park where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and was frequently referred to as the “prayer warrior.” He provided communion services at nursing homes in the community, was a part of the hospitality committee, and served as an usher during mass. When asked how he was doing he would often reply with “All is right with the Lord.” William had a passion for music and would often spend his time listening to his vinyl record collection. He had an extensive collection of Harley-Davidson t-shirts and had a passion for Sci-Fi, Star Trek and Star Wars being his favorites. He was known for his humorous personality and kind giving spirit. William has influenced and blessed our lives beyond measure. We love him dearly and he will be greatly missed. He will be in our hearts always. The funeral service will take place at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 4661 82 nd Avenue North Pinellas Park, FL 33781 on Saturday, April 9th at 12pm. He will be laid to rest at the Bay Pines National Cemetery 10000 Bay Pines Blvd. N, St Petersburg, FL 33708 on Tuesday, April 12th at 11am. William nació el 11 de julio de 1945 en Utuado, Puerto Rico. Sus padres fueron Ofelio Santiago e Inés Díaz. Se trasladó de niño a Brooklyn, New York, donde inició su carrera como cartero. A finales de la década de 1980, se transfirió a la oficina postal de Pinellas Park, donde residió y trabajó como cartero por varios años. Recientemente, William residió en Grand Villa en Dunedin, donde estableció amistades con sus residentes y empleados. William fue un orgulloso veterano del Ejercito Estadounidense (U.S. Army) y combatió en Vietnam con la 173ra Brigada Aérea. Además, fue miembro de los Caballeros de Colón y un feligrés de la Iglesia Católica del Sagrado Corazón en Pinellas Park, donde sirvió como ministro de la eucaristía y se le conocía como el “guerrero de la oración.” Proveyó servicios de comunión en asilos para envejecientes en la comunidad, formó parte del comité de hospitalidad y fungió de ujier en las misas. Cuando se le preguntaba como se encontraba, frecuentemente contestaba “Todo está bien con el Señor.” William tenía pasión por la música y frecuentemente escuchaba su colección de discos de vinilo. Poseía una extensa colección de camisetas de Harley-Davidson y le apasionaba la ciencia ficción, siendo sus favoritas Star Trek y Star Wars. Se le conocía por su personalidad humorosa y su dadivosidad. William influyó y bendijo nuestras vidas más allá de toda medida. Lo amamos mucho y lo echaremos mucho de menos. Permanecerá en nuestros corazones por siembre. El servicio funerario se realizará en Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 4661 82nd Avenue, North Pinellas Park, FL 33781 el sábado 9 de abril al mediodía. Se sepultará en Bay Pines National Cemetery, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd. N, St Petersburg, FL 33708 el 12 de abril a las 11:00 am.
