Lovena M. Steele

Libby graduated in 1956 from St. Petersburg Junior College and Mound Park School of Nursing. After graduation she registered with the local American Red Cross Nurses Association for service in natural or other disaster situations. She always wanted to help people and make a difference. She worked at Mound Park/Bayfront Medical Center for over 37 years. In that time, some of the positions she held were from staff nurse to assistant director of nursing services. Libby was involved in teaching the first, �Paramedics� in the City of St. Petersburg. Libby spent many hours mentoring new Nurses, and many students. Her career as a Nurse was second only to the love she had for the little girl she was helping raise, Nancy. Libby often volunteered at the school as a chaperone/nurse. Keeping the students ready for whatever came along. Libby attended the University of Illinois and many conferences, all over the country. She was the pilot CCRN in the state of Florida. With Bayfront becoming a Trauma Center, Libby turned her interest to physical rehab, and was soon the Charge Nurse on that treatment floor. There she finished her career getting patients back on their feet. When asked what service award she wanted before she retired, Libby asked for a ride on the Bay Flight Helicopter! Just because she left Bay front didn�t slow her down. She was Nana to her grandchildren Brian and Sarah. Libby also became very active in the Lakewood Estates Homeowner�s Association, holding both the Vice President and Secretary Treasure. Libby also held the position of treasure on the C.O.N.A, Council of Neighborhood Associations of Southern Pinellas County. Her impute and ideas lead to many improvements in not only Lakewood Estates, but other neighborhoods all over St. Pete. Her love of nature lead her to Boyd Hill Nature Preserve were she was a life member. Libby was also a long time member of the Sierra Club and the National Wildlife Federation. She traveled with family to almost all of the National Parks in this beautiful Country. Hiking and traveling on the roads less travelled. Libby touched many lives in many ways, and made a difference for many people. She will be missed very much.
